. That's pretty cool. Sounds like last year he proved himself a good hunter by turning down bad shots. This year he got his reward for his patience. Yes sir. He's a good kid who loves to hunt but also has already shown a respect for what he hunts. Thanks for all of the nice comments guys. I let him...

He used the one with no scope. The old Marlin is one that I had with me but is to heavy for him to lug around. The Winchester 94 AE Ranger is a perfect size for him.

Re: My 8 Year Old Got His First Deer
Thank you all for the nice comments. Last season we did everything right and never got a good shot. This hunt we forgot our hunting box with most of our gear in it. Had to scrounge to even find him an orange hat. He was going to use a shotgun but the shells were in our box that we forgot. We did not...

Re: Not Lever but need Winchester 1903 help
Went back and looked again and found the proof mark. Due to the nickel finish its hard to see markings because of all the reflections that show up and account of my bad eyes.
I zoomed in with my phone to get you a decent photo of it. Hope this helps.

Re: Not Lever but need Winchester 1903 help
The thing that stands out to me is how thin the model legend is . I think its a very old rework .Most of the old nickel plated guns usually the markings are very dark and usually always some tiny amount of flaking. I have had and seen worn dies with broken letters etc. though. I would think the W/P...

Ok Rube...I'm 95% sure it's original.......the wood matches the metal, condition for condition,....when a gun is refinished it's always AFTER it's beat....the serial number stampings with the plating is right.....wood to metal fit is near perfect.....wear on the receiver is consistent with what I'v...

Yes, the 1903 was available in different platings. It was not a great seller due to the special ammo......MANY ...

My landlord has one his father used in the 1st WW with the RFC, (the British government bought loads of them and millions of rounds of ammo for training), because it wasn't working right he took it to a local gunsmith who tried it with .22 LR and gave up, I told him it took different ammo and he sa...

Re: Not Lever but need Winchester 1903 help
Rube...that's an interesting gun.....I see parts (trigger and some internals) that were not supposed to be nickeled....not nickeled.....wood to metal fit is appropriate so,it's not as if someone took a beater and renickeled it. The rear barrel sight looks to be nickeled and that's what throws it of...

First, please forgive me that this is not a lever. I just know you guys have lots of knowledge on other guns also so I thought I would ask. Excellent Rube. Very, very excellent. I had the pleasure of spending a day in the saddle on the J-S. Did you know the south fence of the corrals is the border fence? The cussed horse I had borrowed actually tore a post out of the shed where I tied him. Well, it made a memory. Thanks and goodness. I...

Thank you all. It was a fun project and one that I just kind of backed into. Started out with a facination of the original John Slaughter photo because his 1887 was so prominant. Great job of restoration, well done  those type of cartridge belts are often found in the UK usually made of spring steel. I have used them in the past but once carelessly scratched my stock on an empty shell holder. They are quick to use and hold the shells securely. Sometimes I see a row...

Re: Winchester 1887
I am pretty sure all the Winchester Model 1887 shotguns were pre-smokeless. The Winchester Model 1901 lever action shotgun was made for smokeless powder, but is only available in 10 guage. If you want 12 guage, you have to go with the Model 1887. That's my understanding anyway. By the way, the 1887...

Thanks. This one is a pre-smokeless one also.

Rube, that one looks really nice. Is it a 12 or a 10? I used to watch some of the boys do the SASS thing a dozen years ago, and one guy had an 87 in 10 gauge that he campaigned on the shotgun stage. He only loaded with black powder, and oh, my, what a wonderful boom when he lit it off. This one is ...
