I'm just catching up, I had to throw some gas on the fires of a couple other threads,...... :D I do use a filler, it seems to give much more consistant ignition of the tiny charge in that size case. I use a puff of dacron pillow stuffing, about 1/2 to 3/4" across when not packed. I tamp it down...

I certainly agree that the 243 in any configuration is a better longer range gun than the 30-30, but ,....the Hornady 170 gr bullet is the absolute clunker of the ballistic coeficient world in 30 cal 170 gr bullets, about the only thing with a poorer bc would be a full wadcutter. I don't feel it's productive to disparage anyone elses "hunting" experience because they choose different tools. The handgun hunters often disparage rifle hunters, the muzzle loader boys look down at the modern gun hunters, and the bow hunters feel smug comparing their choices to gun hunt...

It gets a bit warm around here in the lower parts of the country in summer, but it's always about 20 or 30 degrees cooler up on the mountain. I've awoke with frost on my pillow sleeping out under the stars in July up about 9000 or 10,000 ft elevation.

I don't think adjustable sights for a hunting pistol are useless, quite the opposite. It gives you the chance to get your point of impact set to the exact range and load you want to use. I'd like to have some for dog walking in the fringe areas of grizzly country. I carry the 30-30 in the open areas down lower, usually the 45-70 or 348 up higher.

Looks like they'd work fine in 308 or 30-06 also. It's hard to find good solids.

I believe the 1886 bands will be much too large in every dimension. I voted .22, but I do really like 32-20 level loads in the 30-30. 100 to 120 gr cast bullets @ 1200 fps make good small game and grouse loads, and you have 30-30 range and power by cycling the lever (I single load the light loads and leave the magazine loaed with regular loads).

I think the change was earlier, like after the war (WW2). Later pre-64's have the same butt stock fitting details as the post 64 guns. The back end of the forends changed in 64, and at some point they made the wood shorter in front of the band, I think it was shortly after the war also.
