Sears has a good all steel rifle cabinet for under $150. I rented a HILTI hammer drill and fastened mine to the concrete floor with 3.5 inch concrete anchors and welded chain. 30-30 carbines remain ever popular within the deer camps of Pennsylvania. The 170 grain softnose factory load has a very long and enviable reputation of anchoring deer quickly at typical forest distances.

This is my Glenfield model 30GT built by Marlin. I bought it new in 1979 at a Western Auto store. Barrel is 18.5 inches and makes for a very handy hunting carbine. Nope, not for sale. For 5 years I hunted with the 240 gr XTP used with Harvester Crusher sabots. 105 grains of 777 loose powder. Genuine one shot kills everytime but rarely a pass through penetration for blood trail. My USAF buddy lives in Manassas, Virginia and hunts on private farm land for deer. He typically knocks down 3 - 5 does each season with his CZ 7.62 X 39 carbine. Winchester Power Point ammo and Simmons scope. None got away. For a non-lever the CZ is a keeper!

I often hunt with my RUGER 96 in 44MAG. My favorite bullet is the 270 grain Speer which delivers excellent accuracy and very good penetration. I've taken 11 deer with the Hornady XTP bullet. All were one shot kills but at varying distances of 50-85 yards. My Ruger carbine in 44 MAG shoots them accurately but 100% penetration is not typical. I now load the 270 grain bullet by Speer for the penetration I wanted to acheive.

Chart shows that 25-06 recoils LESS than .308. I've been telling my friends this for years but no one ever believed me.
25-06 is a great cartridge that has been largely ignored by most hunters. That being said, 25-06 is not a levergun cartrdige which is why I don't own one anymore.
