There also were "paper" catridges before metallic catridges.

Several Civil War firearms, the most famous being the Sharps, loaded a paper cartridge with a percussion cap as a primer.

Berdan primers -- what a PITA!

Once tried to deprime them via the "Hydraulic Method" -- fill the case with water, insert a wood dowel, pound dowel home, and have water everywhere. :lol: :lol: :lol:

Needless to say it didn't work too well....

Joe: considering that Walmart "buys in bulk", I wonder what the selling price of .45 Colt is at the local Mom & Pop gun shop?

The local shop by me doesn't stock much factory ammunition as it mainly sells powder and primers and some of the more common/popular factory calibres.
