It's kind of amazing what you find out from old papers. My maternal grandfather was a China Sailor. We knew that but didn't know he was decorated there. We thought he just went to Pearl after that, but as it turned out he ended up in Nicaragua during the 1928 banana war. Turned out sailors had books...

Looks like the rescue boat school at Cape Disappointment, Washington. Those boats are designed to roll over and self right. Then just keep on going. We’ve got at least one stationed here. Pretty impressive boats.

Adequate first aid kits (actually good ones go well beyond “first aid”) are a must. Training to use the stuff inside is a must. But even more important are two things. The mindset to use the kit and acceptance that you can’t save everyone. The last is a really hard lesson to learn.

Docs got good words of wisdom. Whether you can really do any good in a bad situation comes down to individual willingness to do what’s needed. First aid is messy. Nath faces many of the same problems we face with coyotes. They breed fast, are very destructive and have somehow garnered the support of ignorant urbanites. Here, it isn’t until one looses a pet or even child that many keep their Disneyesque views of wildlife. Even with these losses some never learn.
