I shoot 7 grains of unique with a 240 grain at times in cowboy action. It cronos 840fps out of my vaqueros with 4 5/8 barrels and 1060fps out of a 19 inch uberti 1866. I think you could expect about the same from a 20 inch rifle. Can't tell you how it works on game, but works fine on steel targets.

I have a Japchester 30-40 1895 carbine. I stick with the Sierra 220 grain roundnose over 42. grains of H4831. Chronos about 1900 fps and hits like a 1 1/4 oz 12 gauge slug.... DRT!

I have a couple pairs of those, a 5.5 inch set and a 4 5/8 inch set. You need to get a set of cylinders made up in 44-40 and you have it all covered. I got my second set of cylinders in 44-40 in blue and the guns are stainless. So, I even have the pinto angle covered.

I've long said that the M1 Carbine is a much better HD platform than the AR. At engagement distances inside a normal home of less than 30ft, my 30 Carbine loaded with Speer 110grn JHP is my 1st line of defense.
