Re: How many hunt with a Winchester 71
I hunted with the 71 last year and I can tell you real men hunted with 71s. Because they get very heavy in a short period of time when walking with one. So all those old timers that hunted with the 1886 and 71 were more man I. This year I will hunt with the Win 1895 which I find is a little lighter ...

My Marlin 93 carries just as nice as my Win 94. I have plenty of both Winchesters and Marlins. They all have their merits. My first was a WIn 94 when I was 13 so I prefer to carry them, because that is what I used for the first 10 years of deer hunting.

The 356 Win is one my favorite whitetail cartridges. The 308 is a great all around whitetail cartridge that is hard to beat, but the 356 with the 200 grainers seems to anchor them better. The 35 Rem with 200 grainers knocks deer down but is limited on range. Before all the gun prices went nuts with ...

Nice snag! The 450 marlin will have plenty of power in that light gun. Enjoy it as is. Get a 100 pieces of brass and it will last you many years. With the porting don't shoot it without ear muffs.

In the Guns and Ammo article I notice when they showed the receiver for the 45-70 and it had V threads for the barrel instead of the old square threads. That is a plus for strength. Now if they ditch the Micro Groove rifling when they start producing the 30-30 it will be a better Lever gun.

I hunted with my 30-30 until I was 28. When I wanted more power and I went to a BLR in 308. It handles like a 30-30 but with more power. One of my favorite deer rifles.
