Re: Some range days are disappointing - 22 Hornet this time
Your Hornet groups vertically. This suggests to me that the issues are mostly load, not rifles. In my experience, the Hornet responds dramatically to good handloads. I had consistant 1/2" or better 100 yd groups after much load work. Like Hobie suggested, Li'l Gun is a great powder for the Horn...

Glad I saw this posting. I sold my Hornet some years ago (but kept the components), and think about another from time to time. The composite stocked version looks really good to me.
I think the .22 Hornet is one of the all-time nifty cartridges and useful, too.

For your stated applications, I don't understand the need for fast reload. And, if one learns how to use a SA revolver, the cocking time issue is moot, especially if we are talking about a PA woods revolver. If you want a tough revolver that will do everything you can imagine, look at Ruger SBHs and...

I shot the Hornet for years and thought I'd never be without one, but here I am without one. I still have dies, some brass, etc., but I doubt I'll ever get another. I used Nosler 40 gr BTs to great effect, Hornady 40 gr Vmax at times. W-W brass exclusively, Winchester primers, Lee Collet dies and th...

Are you committed to the .430 bore size? I like a 4 5/8" run of the mill Blackhawk in .45 Colt where necessary. Thirty-six ounces and capable of rather stout loads. Reliable as heck. Used ones with some wear....great rough country revolvers where critters can bite back. If you have to stick wit...

Beats me. Since I don't buy factory cartridges, there would be no difference in price compared with other cartridges. Maybe a bit less, the way it looks in perusing vendors. The older Standard No 1's had the big forearm and (generally) had 26" barrels. I don't think these are cataloged anymore. Correct me if I'm wrong. The No1A (light sporter) has and had the Alex Henry forearm that is pretty IMO and carries a 22" barrel. These make for really trim rifles. Edi...

One more comment. You'll notice in Noah Zark's pictures that his scopes are mounted back as far as he can. I've owned one, a 1A in .270 Win. It was beautiful with tiger-striped figure in the stock, and after a bit, shot extremely well. Mr. Wright makes the point. In my experience, you cook same as venison and can expect the same results. I care more about how the trigger feels more than the weight of pull. A light but draggy pull is rotten. A trigger with a gritty and heavy pull is bad. I can get used to any trigger quickly that breaks cleanly. In a hunting rifle, I would wish for a 3.5-4 pound trigger that breaks crisply like snapp...

Access loading manuals for actual loads. Using the internet for loading data is pretty risky business. In a rifle, of the two powders you list, Li'l Gun would deliver far better magnum performance. Slower burning powders such as 2400, IMR 4227, and 110/296 take advantage of the longer barrel. In han...
