Re: Gun storage in damp location questions
I agree with C.Cash. Ballistol has worked well for me for years. I wouldn't store guns where air could not circulate unless that area is dehumidified in some way. Dehumidified safe is the way to go for several reasons, IMO.

Joe, I keep coming back to either a Bianchi Lawman or El Paso Saddlery Threeperson's. I stick them on a basic heavy 1.75" belt. No wild west, no cartridge loops, no fancy smancy carving. Just good well-made leather that will last decades.

Re: Rifle Zeros..?
Any wood stocked rifle will have a good chance of zero wandering over the year as the wood shrinks, swells, etc. Plastic stocked rifles get knocked around, even if mostly sitting in the safe as you move things about. You would not only want to check zero before taking a rifle out to hunt, you'd want...

NonPCnraRN, now there's a combination: .270 WCF and a nice .338-06. Perfect.
Rusty, reading O'Conner seems like just the thing on this cold, windy night. I think I'll throw another log on the fire and pull something of his off my shelf.

Very nice indeed.
I've gone full circle in middle age back to the .243 Win (Browning A-bolt). It does what I need done and is a delight to shoot.

Re: Minimum battery?
A minimum battery is a good thing (heretic!). Why complicate life, and why not spend time mastering what you need and have instead of accumulating more stuff? For the East, one might have a .22 rifle, "deer" rifle (and bear, if so inclined), a general purpose shotgun, and suitable handgun....

Re: Who's a fan of the .270 Win?
The .270 WCF is a wonderful cartridge, suitable for most herbivores in NA. It is my favorite cartridge, even though I no longer own one (for various reasons not related to this discussion) at this time. It might recoil too much for the guy who hunts groundhogs all summer. There are better cartridges...

Good triggers are a blessing. Afterall, it is the doohickie that starts the whole process, sort of the mind, body, machine connection (Zen Mind, Zen Trigger). It is not possible to do precision shooting if you have no idea when the firearm is going to go off, it goes off with different feel each tim...

Re: Why your choice of 12 gauge or 20 gauge.
I have no real preference between 20, 16, or 12. It is the gun that determines what gauge I use. If I still had an 870, it would be a 20. However, I had 2 SxSs a few years ago. One was a 5lb 14oz 20, and the other was a 6lb 8oz 12. The 12 is what I use today. The 20 was not enough gun. Not in ballis...

Remington M870 12 ga. With an open choke tube and a somewhat tighter spare, what can't be done with that gun? Loads go from 7/8 oz through too much for me.
Easily maintained, reliable, and a natural pointer. I'd rather have the Wingmaster, but the Express does the job at an extremely low price.

Re: Extemely way off topic: about guitars
It is never too late to start anything fulfilling and fun. If not now, when? Like anything else, what you get out of it is what you put into it. Guitars are nice in that one can make real music fairly quickly. Practice is the key to learning anything: the more you do, the better you get. If you have...

They go from 12-16 bucks per brick, depending on the manufacturer. Of course, my .22s like the more expensive stuff.

The Marlin .45 Colt CB will do everything I need in these woods. If the range is longer for some reason, this is where the "hunting" begins.

Perhaps a Smiff would provide an easier/nicer DA trigger pull in a snubby. Definately she could start building up the strength in her master hand. It won't take long if she works at it. I think the DA revolver is less prone for something to go wrong, with the user not having great presence of mind d...

This isn't too hard: 12 ga shotgun (I prefer a SxS of decent quality bored SK and Sk or open IC and modified. You can keep the howitzers that some call shotguns.) .22 bolt rifle w/ good scope .45 Colt levergun w/ peep sights .45 Colt Ruger BH .22 revolver, probably a stainless small frame DA (This i...

I live out in the sticks. Yes, we have a phone line (a good thing since cell phones have no reception), so I have dialup. If I get 45K, I'm so very happy. Usually, I do not get that kind of connection since the phone lines are not so hot. Still, it's the only game in town....er....sticks.

I was basically there about 10 years ago because I want to, not out of necessity.
Bolt .22
Ruger .45 colt BH
and, if allowed in the scenario, a 12 ga shotgun.
If I have to give something up, it would be the .22 rifle.

Re: Ten Good Guns Are Easy.....But:
The worse shooters I ever had were 3 Old Model Rugers. Throats of varying diameters, barrels of questionable bore quality, etc. Overall, not good. The New Models I have owned (there's been a few) have all been just peachy. I'll let the collectors and converters buy the Old Models. I stick with the n...

I don't know why they have to list "net water capacity". This looks like a lawyer nightmare if someone mistakes that column for a charge weight. Imagine. Besides, I don't think charging a .45 colt case with 28.0 grs of H2O will give much performance. Heck, you'd need somekinda magnum prime...

Re: OT: Single Actions, fixed or adjustable sights?
The rear sight on adjustable sixguns are more out there and could take a hit, maybe if the gun is dropped. I have a spare rear (and springs) for Ruger SAs in the parts bin, but I doubt if I'll ever use it. But, I have seen a Vaquero front sight broken off. It looks easy to do. I can replace the rear...

Re: OT - Hunting Handgun Thoughts
I've hunted with 7 1/2" superblackhawks mostly, groundhogs and whitetails, settling on 240 XTPs over either 2400 or IMR 4227. The bullets behave like they are supposed to, and the revolvers have always been accurate, except for the old model (good riddance). For the money, I can't seen a better...

I get my general purpose 255 gr swc cast bullets from MidStates Cast Bullets. OK, they're bevel based. I will tell you that they are dandy indeed in my Rugers over a variety of powders and loads. general pupose .45 colt loads
I've been looking for a better "general purpose" load that works well in both rifle and Ruger revolvers (not the NewVaquero). So far, I basically shoot the "Keith load" using 255 gr SWCs and 2400. Or, I substitute a 250 gr XTP. These loads are accurate in all firearms I have had,...
