A little off topic, but I'm rereading Tigero! by Sasha Siemel. He hunted Jaguars with a spear in the Matto Grosso of Brazil. He used dogs. His wife wrote a good book too. Jungle Wife

Re: Pointy bullets in tubular magazines
I've never felt the need for pointed bullets in a 30-30, but have always figured it would be about impossible to set off a cartridge in the tube with a bullet with a soft lead point.

Re: Reloading the 40-72 cartridge
I just got an 1895 1n .40-72 with a tapered octagon barrel and excellent bore. I'm searching for info to get it shooting. It might be hard on a poor boy. RCBS makes dies and Buffalo Arms has them for $164. I haven't slugged the bore yet, but from everything I've read, I was expecting it to slug clos...

Re: How about the "most under-appreciated" cartridge!
Kirk, I'd also say the 38-40 is a great canidate for "the most under-appreciated cartridge" . I can't think of any modern or reproduction levers that have ever been chambered for it. If you read Cartridges Of The World, 44-40 is one of the greatest cartridges ever, and the 38-40 is just ab...

Neat, Would they be rare in .32 W.S.? I don't believe any were ever loaded with black powder, or any 32sp bbl's not designed for smokeless.

Re: How about the "most under-appreciated" cartridge!
Well I guess I put the .30-30 into the "taken for granted" area, rather than underappreciated. And I think there's a difference. It may be underappreciated by gun rags, and gun writers, but it sure doesn't seem to be underappreciated by the general shooting and hunting population. Yea. Gu...

I also believe the 30-30 is one of the most appreciated cartridges. I'll go with .356+358 as under appreciated.

I'd sell my 1894cl 25-20 for $500. I'll put it in the classifieds if Boreman doesn't want it. Got a NIB 32-20 too. They're the older ones without checkering. Dave

Re: Help With 40-65 Winchester
What about taking the decapping part out of the die and using a vise to size the case. You would have to knock it out with a rod, but you could run the case alot farther up into the die. Kind of like the old lyman sizing dies. I've done this myself on certain calibers. I simply run the case through...

I know it's really nit pickey, But I'll tell you why I said "It's not proof of original finish" Not too long ago I got an SRC that had been reblued. I removed the blueing, and now It's got a more attractive, at least to me pewter look, complete with striations.

Re: Drag Marks typical to old Winchesters?
They're not "proof of original finish". They are interesting. I have 2 Win 1894's that are about 5000 numbers apart, both made in 1895. One has many of the marks. They sure look like you should be able to feel them with your fingernail, but you can't. The other, which has about all of the ...

Re: savage mod 99 303
I always wanted a 99H. For those that didn't know, Bill Ruger's first auto was a 99 he converted to semi-automatic. He was really fond of the 99-H, and if you look at his 44 carbine, 10/22, and No. 3, it's easy to see the influence.

Is anyone aware of another rifle that was chambered for 303 Savage besides the 99? Chad I've often wondered the same thing. I've subscribed to Devine ans Amoskeag auction catalogs for many years, as well as constantly looking at guns on the internet. I've never seen one. I alway's thought it was in...

I'd jump on it if the bore's nice. The tang sights nice, but take a good look as alot of 99 stocks are damaged right behind the tang, and a sight hides alot of it. I'd still buy it, but I'm fond of any 1/2 oct. Reloading 303's simple. Here's some formed brass. http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/4...

I've got one on a 1895 Marlin in the works. My gunsmith makes a swagging die to swag down .429 bullets, and says they're having good luck with them. Bullet selection is pretty limited. I think a 45-70 necked to .405 might be a better choice.

I've thought about rechambering a Marlin 1894CL, but it's way on the back burner. I've got a Marlin Model 62 and forming dies. I like the factory scope, but I rarely take it out.
