Re: Winchester 1886-Replace trigger and hammer with Browning

I'm curious. How difficult would it be to cut a half cock notch in the Winchester hammer? Would it need to be heat treated afterwards? Did you lighten the hammer spring or just cut off the rebound finger or both? Bill Bill I have not done the material testing on the new 86s, but my guess is that th...

Most likely nickle steel But I dont see the ususal NI steel markings, barrels made of NI Steel during that time frame were generally marked M.N.S. for Midvale Ni steel, supplied by the Midvale steel co. Re: 1886 barrel markings. What do these mean?

That is an interesting barrel, it’s a late production barrel after Winchester changed to smokeless powers and reduced the diameter of the barrels. That’s why no relief cut for the magazine tube on the bottom of the barrel. More than likely it had a screw in mag tube. It is also after Winchester stop...

Couple of things that I ran into while doing the conversion from 32-20 to 38 spc/357. The biggest challenge is the rim diameter: 32-20 is .408, .357 is .440. This requires that you first open up the magazine tube hole in the frame to accommodate the larger rim dia. I did this in the mill, with the f...
