Re: Caution on who does Color Case hardening

Thanks Again to KirkD for letting me use his rifle on my site; most of my customers don’t want it known that they had work done on their guns…. Caution on who does Color Case hardening

Got in a Winchester 1886 a while back, nice rife, had been Color Case Hardened by someone else (advertises a lot in Gun List). Buttplate cracked when the owner tried to install it, too hard, frame was warped enough that the bolt wouldn’t operate properly, lower tang warped… geesh what a mess. A lot ...

One other thing is the ejector, they are caliber specific, so if you want to change ctg size you will need to change or modify the ejector. They are hardened, so either machine with carbide tooling or anneal them prior to machining then re harden them. I just made the barrels & converted a coupl...

Measure the Shank Dia of the Uberti, believe the Win 1885 dia is fairly large; around .935 . not in my shop right now so don't hold me to it. If the shank dia of the Uberti is the same size or larger, then the answer is yes, it can be rethreadded to fit. 1885's have a 16 TPI standard 60 deg V thread...

Go back to you hardware store and buy a little bottle of pipe threading oil, or dark cutting oil, its highly sulperized and stinks to high heaven.

Running a tap in SS, go very slow and clear the chips often, stainless can be some hard stuff, normal HSS taps really don’t like SS.

Ok

What you need is a good Lathe: $ 8-10K
Bison 5C Collet chuck $500
Emergency 5 C Collet $25

Now bore the 5 C collett, to the same size as the head, now just put screw into chuck and trim off .065

Ok.

Take the mag plug out, remove the cross pin from mag hanger, remove the 2 screws from the fe cap. now it should slide out. If its been in for a whaile (couple of decades) it may need some minor twisting. It may also help to grease the tube, help it thru the mag ring.

I've shot M1As for years, currently have a 18in bbl scout. Accuracy with open sights is about 1 1/2 inch groups at 100, the front blade is the standard width, not a NM front, with scope I would expect sub MOA. First of all, don’t lap it in. As stated earlier that affects both mating surfaces. Take it to a gunsmith with a lathe, and who knows how to use it. The 94 is threaded .13/16 -20. So one turn of the barrel will move the barrel in .05 (or fifty thou) With that in mind, yes ¼ turn is a bit much, you w...

Old Savage Beat it, dont know.... But again for consistant performance, I'd go with a Sako. Every company that makes guns has a few great shooters, and a few dogs, most are somewhere in the middle. Simple... The Sako FinnWolf

Sako is the only mass producer of rifles that guarantees 1 MOA when the rifle leaves the factory.

I've got two, both over 20 years old, and both will do 1 inch groups at 100 all day long, to the point that its almost boring.
