Nice find! Great caliber. Not so much on the butt pad, you are going to feel those 200 grainers go off both in your wallet and on your shoulder! Never understood why the .356/.307 didn't take off, seemed like pretty good cartridges - wonder if they'd do better now with the (semi) resurgence in inte...

Saw this in the shop in December 2022. It was still there so today I made it mine. No safety except half cock as far as I can tell, either. So yay! Should be about 1982, going by the stock. I’m looking at getting a .356 winchester next. Basically next Gen of the 348 but lighter and handier.
You could do a .45-70 based .338 wildcat on a 336, if you’re a fan of the bore diameter.

Taylor’s sells the Chiapa 1887 for almost $1800. Wow. In all honesty, that shotgun, with an additional rifled choke tube and some kind of rifle sights would suit me far better. Could still play with black powder slug loads. And any 12 gauge 2 3/4” load, light or heavy. https://www.raytrade.com.au/p...

Re: Thinking of a 1886/71 in 444 marlin
Everyone has a .45-70. .444 is overlooked but equally versatile. There’s a guy who runs some dang powerful loads out of a modded marlin .444, and the 1886 is stronger than that action.
He’s getting a 405gr over 4000ft/lbs.

I’ll have to try some more speed variation with time. My original plans to just load trapdoor velocities.
Those 400’s are meant to be able to get close to 2000, yikes!
I also want to replace the rear and front sights.

What is with all the big loop levers these days? Did human hands increase in size over the last 100-150 years (along with bellies)? I have an 1895cb set up with a shaver tang sight and it loves smacking steel waaay out yonder. I really think marlin nailed the profile of the barrel on these, enough weight out front to hang nice offhand while slim enough not to be a burden carrying the thing in the woods. Particularly the Chiappa, rather than the Chinese or originals. Curious how they find them to use. Wanting to get an 1887, probably going the Italian route. Chiappa make decent rifles and I’m curious how these shotguns go. Going to get the 28” barrel version as I want it for fowl

I LOVE my 444 94 Bigbore, but nothing beats an M4 as a survival rifle. 15 to 20 hits on an elephant is just as good as 1 hit from a 458 Lott. There just may be something to that... Not gunna happen but what cartridge would you choose, if having to go with original ballistics?
I think .45-75 because the 350gr bullets going to have better penetration than the 300gr .50-95’s.
Next question is would you, if you could?
