.45 Colt & Winchester 94 AE Loads

Hello from the UK, Have a post 64 Winchester 94AE 16 inch trapper threaded for a suppressor. Have tested some loads with 6.5 grains Red Dot behind a 250 grain LRN using a CCI primer. Have not chrono’d however want to get to approx 1000 FPS to maximise energy whilst keeping the load subsonic. So far ...

Re: Winchester 94 AE Trapper .45 Colt Feeding Issues

Thanks for the reply - the carrier does need a hard push down to lower. Where the cartridge hadn’t been positioned to chamber, it was wedged between the cartridge guides and the lifter, and the positioning of the round had impeded the lifter from moving the round up. Gently closing the action a smal...

Re: Winchester 94 AE Trapper .45 Colt Feeding Issues

The lifter spring is present.

The below photos show a dummy round that was lifted, but at a too shallow angle to successfully chamber.

The other photo shows the same round after giving the lever a good solid whack.

Could it be that I’m just cycling the action too gently?

Re: Winchester 94 AE Trapper .45 Colt Feeding Issues

Many thanks for the response - the lifter is lifting however not without a mega hard cycle and when it does it occasionally drops - am going to inspect the lifter spring. Perhaps mine is bent or even missing - although not sure it would lift at all without one!? Hello back to you in the UK - PM me y...

Winchester 94 AE Trapper .45 Colt Feeding Issues

Hello from the UK, Have the above rifle, and the cartridge lifter doesn’t work reliably even with a hard cycle. Have stripped, cleaned and lubed the rifle with some improvement although the lifter is only popping up 80% of the time. I’m generally loading 250 grain LRN at 1.57 COAL so no problems the...

Re: .45 Colt Winchester 94 AE Trapper

Thoroughly appreciate the calculation.

Given the lack of pressure signs on the decent starline brass, and a modern 1894 action, I don’t think there’s a problem.

Velocity wise, given the shorter OAL cartridge hitting 1100 FPS ish, the standard OAL should be around 1000 ish.

Re: .45 Colt Winchester 94 AE Trapper

Thanks - saw no pressure signs whatsoever with 6.5 grains, so should be ok.

Re: .45 Colt Winchester 94 AE Trapper

Want to achieve 950 - 1000 FPS to work with my suppressor. Griff - thanks for the info and velocity charts, interesting to see a 150 FPS increase from 17'' to 18''. My load is 6.5 grns of red dot, under a 250 grain LRNFP bullet - great minds! Without a chrono, I started with 6 grns, and having heard...

Re: .45 Colt Winchester 94 AE Trapper

Hi guys, Many thanks for the help - have another question! Had good success with a mild load of red dot under a 250 LRNFP bullet in my '94 16" barrelled trapper. I loaded these to crimp to the cannular at around 1.575 inches or thereabouts. I have accidentally loaded some to 1.54 ish. Is this s...

Re: .45 Colt Winchester 94 AE Trapper

Thanks for the responses - I'll use LRN 250 grain for my 1000 FPS loads.

For 1500 FPS plus, I'll look at JHP or perhaps HN /LOS Copper Plated - or would 1500+ be too fast for plated?

Not sure of my groove diameter, however assume that .451, .452, and .454 bullets are ok, but .458 would be too much?

.45 Colt Winchester 94 AE Trapper

Hello everyone, Recently acquired the above rifle in excellent condition, threaded and supplied with a suppressor. I would like to explore the rifle ballistics of the .45 colt, and develop the following, using as far as possible off the shelf lead and jacketed projectiles. a) 250 grain @ 950 - 1000 ...
