My 99 .30-30 is back with its original owner's family. I got a call from the shop I bought it from saying the family wanted to speak to me about the rifle. Apparently if was mistakenly sold and they wanted to see if I would accept an offer. I had installed a superb Redfield 70 ( thanks again Sixgun)...

Hi All Recently made a ( very) good deal with Sixgun for a Redfield 70 sight for my Savage 99. He said the sight was in new condition. It is, complete with old factory lube/goo in it. Cleaned up easily with a little Hoppes and a qtip. I got the sight for a very good price, he shipped it quickly and ...

My first centerfire, my first deer, my longest shot ( 200 yards. 1 round, DRT) and my biggest buck ( a fine 9 pointer) all have one thing in common. The .30-30. Getting it done, fuss free, since 1895. Oh. My last centerfire, a Savage Model 99, also a .30-30. If I can't get it done with that rifle, I...

There's a channel on you tube called Leatherwood outdoors. Good guy, lots of very interesting average Joe hunts. Anyway, he went deer hunting with a 92 Winchester 25-20. Cleanly killed a couple doe with it using 87 gr factory loads. Got a pass through on one. With careful use its amazing what even a...

Tried the 1A. I am surprised to say the least. Shot 2 groups at 50 yards after roughly co witnessing it to the open sights. Only had to come slightly left on the front sight to zero. That was nice! The first group was a nice 11/16 inch. The 2nd was 4 shots and that was 15/16 with 3 in 5/8 inch. I ne...

Levergunners anonymous? Hi, I'm Mark and I'm a levergunner. Hi Mark. I did try Leverevolution powder. Too much speed. Hit 2500 fps with a 150 grain and still had a grain to go before reaching a max charge. My goal was to hit factory advertised velocities with the 150s and 170s. CFE223 gets me there ...

Oh boy... Something tells me I should just get used to the semi buckhorn. I took a quick line of sight lining up front, rear and tang holes. Remarkably, they seem pretty much aligned. Re: Coming together.

I suppose. But, if you shim, you're canting the sight and while your on at the zeroed range, won't you start shooting off at longer ranges because of it? Not building windage into the sight does seem a bit silly. Perhaps shaving a bit off the side of the stem base to correct and shim the opposite si...

Never had luck with Speer bullets. Just never got the accuracy I got with Sierras and Hornadys. Well, my M99 .30-30 loves them. Very accurate and consistent, so I think I might give them a try for deer and bear. The 150s for deer and the 170s for bear. Anybody use them? Curious how they compare to o...

Absolutely agree about the peeps. Got curious about them after reading Larry Kohler's "Shots at Whitetails". Got hooked on them first time I tried them. For most uses, I feel a good aperture sight is at least equal to, and in some cases better than a scope. FAR less to go wrong with non op...

Actually, not terrible once you're used to them! My M99 wears one and I can stay right around 2 inches for 3 at 100 yards. Flatnose Its odd you mention this. I pulled the Marbles and remounted the factory semi buckhorn rear sight. With the Marbles, my 50 yard groups were an inch to an inch and a quarter for 3. I know about looking through the aperture, but you still see the rest of the sight in the peripheral. Remember F.O.R.S. front opposite rear same as referring to direction of sight movement to correct...

Have had these eyes 55 years. Things are getting a bit fuzzy though. New glasses on the horizon, I guess. Have passed on several nice rifles because of fuzzy front sights.
