Well sir, I had some weird ignition problems with 3031 last year in a moderate load with a .45-70. Nice cast bullets. Lubed with Ideal. Primed with Win LR's. Had a few that just went "pop" and the round hit in front of the bench about 20' away....In nearly 50 years of reloading I never saw...

Well hand lapping involves using a casting made in the lead of the bore around an old wire brush for the job. In short, you plug the bore a couple of inches from the lead in the bore and pour some soft lead in there as you set the brush in the mix. It's tricky to do. Some will cast a bullet with the...

As to the lapping of the bore, I should have got that a lot sooner than I did. My years spent in gunsmithing (retired from that business in '98) I mainly worked on pistols. But I was trained by old school smiths from the 40's and 50's and thus never used an epoxy on anything. The use of pure gum spirts of turpentine or Kroil is where the liquid will creep UNDER the lead in the bore and in effect, raise it up and float the metal on a film of the liquid used. Then it is easily removed by passes of absorbant material and taken away from the metal and out the muzzle. Of cour...

CLP does not remove copper fouling hardly at all. It does a fair job with the carbon fouling and will just barly get some lead. A better cleaner/lube/ is M Pro7 LPX. That will remove fouling from powder and carbon quickly. Is a fairly good bore cleaner, but will not touch copper as with CLP. I perso...

Shasta, Glad that the repair worked as planned. I learned long ago when gunsmithing that you go slow. Approach from the minimum first and never go max unless needed. Well sir, going to a dull red with quick water quence might do the trick. If it gets too brittle, then at least you gave it a good go at it. A toaster oven works nicely. Toss your brass on an old cookie sheet and set if for 200 to 250. Give it about 10 or 15 minutes and let them cool. You're done...IF you can leave the oven door open slightly, it will help as the mositure will escape out the open door rather than hang around inside....
