Gentlemen: While reading then-lieutenant Townsend Whelen's entertaining text, "Red Letter Days in British Columbia", I came across his mention of a favorite rifle, a .40-72 1895 Winchester. I have never heard of this cartridge, and haven't found any information on Google. Can anybody shed ...

I use two methods: a Neanderthal method and a semi-civilized one. The Neanderthal method involves a hardcast, unsized .44 bullet, a dowel or brass rod, and a mallet. Drive the hardcast bullest without lube down the barrel using dowel or rod, and mallet. Bullet will come out of the breech pushing cas...

I have had good results with the 358429 + the equivalent of 5 grains of Unique in my K38s. The same bullet plus 10 grains of Blue Dot gives me more than acceptable results in my .357 magnum T/Contender. However, the same load in my Rossi is not so exciting.

My carry gun is an old 2", 5-shot Rossi. I've had acceptable results delivrred by the old Lyman's 35893 bullet + 5.0 gr of Bullseye. I had the gas check indent milled off the mold. Accuracy is very good from 6" barreled revolvers. This bullet punched through 8 inches of wet phone books. I ...

Re: Full Power .357mag Loads, Battered Brass, and Broken Cases
Hefty loads in 38 SPL cases tend to expand primer pockets. Until recently, anything shooting-related in this country involved an uphill battle to obtain. I secured a number of Berdan-primed cases, punched the anvil out of them, loaded and fired them with 357 magnum loads (mostly Lyman's #358429 @ 14...

Steve, the tool was made from mild, unhardened steel and the claw is polished. The chamber is much harder than the tool. I also made a tool for the Rossi 44 magnum, which I never used.

Re: Full Power .357mag Loads, Battered Brass, and Broken Cases
I had this problem a number of times with .38 SPL cases loaded to magnum pressures. The problem persisted until a new, slower powder was launched in the market. I switched powders and never found the problem again. I did, however, make a tool to remove the case ring that remained in the chamber with...

If that is a standard 30-30 chamber there should not be rifling on the case neck. That neck was in the rifling when the round was fired. You can clearly see the imprinted rifling on it. It's quite possible the corrosive primer theory is correct. I've often wondered about humidity and electrolysis.
