Re: Target Shooting A Thousand Yards With .22 Long Rifle

Older style round nose bullets are less affected by transonic instability than modern Spitzer bullets. I suspect the .22 bullets were still flying reasonably stable even at 400 fps. Most BPCR shooters know that their bullets are quite stable through the transonic and subsonic Mach ranges. Those bull...

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor in a Levergun

I have a bolt action in 6.5 Crdmr. It's a flat shooting son of a gun. Great for long range. Chambering a lever gun in it seems silly to me. My leverguns are for close in brush hunting. Not saying a lever couldn't do it ... just seems like a mis- match to me.

Just my 2 cents

I have spent a lot of time hiking in those same areas of NM - I used to shoot often at the Otero Co. Range there near La Luz.

Not in NM - but near Fort Davis, TX I once found a spent rifle bullet. I believe it is likely from a .38-55.

Re: Making round balls for muzzleloaders

The dimples will reduce drag at all subsonic Mach numbers. They would also reduce the erratic flight that is sometimes seen at Transonic Mach (0.9 to 1.1 or so). This would be especially helpful in a smooth bore. In a rifle, th rifling engraves grooves in the ball as it moves down the barrel. Those ...

We've lived in this house for 14 years and have managed to keep the scorpions under control. We will usually kill 3-4 in the house each summer but that's much better than the 15-20 we used to kill in the house I grew up in (also in the hill country). I've been using Dan Newberry's OCW approach for about 10 years now. It works great! His method of controlling the variables of fouling and barrel heating are great. I've used OCW to develop loads in all my rifles and have successfully used it for 45 ACP in the 1911.

He never says that he shot the boy in the book but I think he wrote something about taking two shots that day - so perhaps he was alluding to it. Either way, that had to be an extremely difficult thing to do and deal with.
