From what I've read "The Kid" used a Colt Lightning in .38 - not a Peacemaker. Of course, that is based on photos from the time. He likely owned several handguns.

Re: A Krag in .308??
First - as others have stated, a .308 in the Krag action is too much. It would stretch the receiver and eventually most likely cause dangerous headspace issues leading to possible case head separation and gas leakage. I 100% agree as already pointed out that we know nothing about the gunsmith who di...

The Hunter books are pretty accurate. I've only found a couple of minor errors in the 9 of his that I've read. He's a good story teller. The Krag action is not "weak" - it is not as strong as a Mauser, but it is fully capable of handling the loads it was designed for (40KSI). The Norwegian Krags can handle a bit higher pressure (from what I understand) as they chose to let the guide rib bear on the receiver. US ordnance cho...

The main reason the military went with the 45-70 over the little Henry/model 66 cartridge was because the little bullet would not stop a cavalry charge. Correct. Remember until the .30-06 was adopted, the primary criteria that sized the bullet design for military cartridges was what it took to reli...
