Re: Question on new Winchesters

Jeez . . . . . . . .why wouldn't anybody want a lever with the finest custom-lawyered MODERN features you can get??????? Who cares if it's anything at all like a classic rifle design that worked just perfectly for 100+ years??? Who cares if the lawyered-up features make it less-than-100% functional?...

In my pile of .30-30 ammo, I've got a very nice old box of Peters 160gr "Full Metal Cased" loads - yup, solids. Guess they were somewhat popular back in the 30s & 40s. They have the "PETERS" headstamp.

Back in the 80s there was an article in the local newspaper about a hunter in northern NH who shot a bear with a "45 to 70 caliber rifle". Must have been the "adjustable" variant of the .45-70.

Haven't seen any yet. It's a 200-grainer, but it appears to have considerably more bearing surface than their old familiar 200-grainer, so the load may be somewhat less.

Re: Winchester 71 trivia question

The serial number puts this gun very near the end of the 71's run. My guess would be that the bolt has been replaced with one from a much earlier gun. Metal on this one doesn't look quite right to me, I suspect that an in-hand inspection would show it to be completely refinished.

Re: I keep crushing the necks

For pulling bullets "pliers-style", I use a pair of full-sized longnose pliers. I lay the pliers across the top of the press. The jaws are plenty long enough to reach across the die-hole and there's no chance of anything contacting the threads that way. The bullets are, of course, throwawa...

Re: I keep crushing the necks

Yup, gotta be that you have the body of the die set too low (too close to the shellholder at the bottom of the die). When you're ready to load your first one, leave the die backed off considerably, so there's no chance of the neck crimper having an effect. Then screw the bullet-seating stem into the...

Just a quick note on the long/short tang varieties. The earlier, long-tang variety came with a nicely hand-knurled hammer. The later, short-tang variety came with a serrated hammer, reducing the need for handwork. There was a transition period when the short-tang still carried the much nicer knurled...

Using a neck sizer saves a lot of work on the brass, and greatly reduces case lengthening. In my experience it easily doubles case life. By the way, I have seen original sling & swivels go $100 - $300 depending on condition. Just the swivels go $100+ unless the owner doesn't recognize what he's holding. Most of the demand is likely from vintage Winchester owners looking to mate them with rifles.

Certainly not original swivels. These appear to be swivel loops which have been opened (spread), inserted into the through-holes in the M71's buttstock swivel base and forend cap, then "closed" again so as to stay there. The owner probably lost or never had the original swivels & wante...
