Re: If you were buying a new Lever gun
I have a Uberti '73 from Cabela's and a Chiappa '92 from Taylor's (both in 44/40); the Chiappa is the same rifle sold by Cimarron. Both are very nice rifles, but I've had the Uberti for fourteen years now, while the '92 is a recent addition to my safe. Either one is bound to be enjoyable, but from t...

Re: Turnbull 1886's
I agree; the fact that they're using Chiappa is not a bad thing at all. I have a Chiappa '92 that is flat out gorgeous, and the action is smooth as silk to boot. Also have one of their '86s on order, but was toying with the idea of going with the Turnbull instead. It's a noticable jump in price, but...

Just to clarify, Cimarron's 1892 copy is made by Chiappa, not Uberti. I recently picked up a Chiappa '92 from Taylor's and, like RedRider's, it is slick as snot, and beautifully finished. Mine is a 44-40, and the bore slugs out to a true .427.

Can't say whether these are the same guns, but I know I've heard that Turnbull was going to be doing some Chiappa '86s with their upgraded finish. Certainly not a bad rifle to start with; I'm hoping to add a Taylor & Company/Chiappa 86 to my safe soon.

It's already been mentioned, but since it's worth repeating, my two cents are to take your time. For me, reloading is just as much of a rewarding pastime as shooting. You picked a fun round to load with the 44-40; it'll reward you with good accuracy pretty easily. Have fun.

I'm brand new to casting as well; as a matter of fact, so far I've only collected wheel weights and melted them down for ingots. Like you, I was initially very concerned about zinc weights, so I started out checking a batch of about fifty pounds with the "pinch them with side cutters" test...

Thanks to everyone for being so generous in sharing your knowledge. Sounds to me like I need to dig up some tin to add to my wheel weights. Definitely makes sense from a budgetary perspective, and it's also a great hobby in and of itself, but a third compelling reason to reload is to enable a person to shoot oddball calibres. I load for the 45-75 Winchester, 45-120 Sharps, and 577/450 Martini Henry rounds. The only realistic way to do a...

As Joe pointed out, the 1876 action was perfectly capable of handling the power and pressure of the army's black powder 45-70 load, but couldn't digest the length of the government cartridge. It's worth pointing out that the 45-75 was loaded with a 350 grain bullet, as compared to the 45-70's 405 gr...

I have a Taylor/Uberti 1876 in 45/75 WCF, which had to have the barrel switched out because of incorrect chamber dimensions; this was an issue with the first run of 45/75s from Uberti.
