What would I buy?
.30-30 Marlin 336
.45-70 Marlin 1895 GS
.300 Sav Savage 99
.357 Ruger GP100
I would also like to start shooting my Colt SSA .38/40, Colt .45 ACP. and Colt .22 Woodsman on a regular basis.

OT (?): Viability as a Hunting Rifle
I am going through a personal renaissance regarding the rifles I am hunting with. Previously, I have always been of the opinon that you needed a larger caliber, specifically the pointy bullet variety with a bolt action, to have a successful hunt (or harvest?) as evidenced by my Smith & Wesson Mo...

Re: Held my first 99!
I can personally attest to the "fever" mentioned above, as I am currently affected by it. Hopefully I will be the new owner of a 99 in .300 sav, .308 or .243 soon, or whenever I get permission from the Boss (read as wife).

Gun Smith,
I don't know any Wayne's from Geneva, however I'm sure some of my coworkers do as they live just out side of town.

86er,
The 99 in Arizona is in far better shape from what I can tell in the pictures. I would imagine that if I contacted the Arizona store they would send it to Minnesota for me to purchase and pick up. I appreciate the comments regarding my uncertainty in buying a used gun.

Savage 99 and used rifle dilema.
I was at the local Cabela's this afternoon and found a Savage 99 chambered in .300 savage in their gun library. They had it listed for $575 but would part with it for $525. The serial number is 1014342. Is this a good deal? I thought the gun was in good condition. It had the normal wear and tear one...

Re: Marlin or BLR?
I want to thank everyone for replying with their opinions. I know that the gun that "feels best" is the correct choice, but I am definitely leaning toward the .30-30 and/or .45-70. IMHO that every collection needs a .30-30. They are all around good guns that are suitable to many different ...

Marlin or BLR?
I have wanted to buy an lever action rifle for the last several years but have never been able to really make up my mind. What I have decided is that I am going to buy one this year. I am considering either a Marlin 336 in .30-30 or possibly a Model 1895 in .45-70. If I go with the BLR I think I wil...
