on a second look at the gun it is much like the third pic you posted the X or broad arrow looks like it was double stamped and is right above and to the right or end of the frame above the S&W logo on the grip.

They are designed for hydrostatic shock damage and the people hollering the loudest about them failing are the one using them for bone breaking hits. My fav is a rather warm load of 748 and a 170gr Nozler or Hornady in my levers or a 150gr Seirra spitzer in my 788 . A 788 Remington in .30-30 would be sweet. I would go .348 I am a 99 guy, so have a .358 the modern .348.
The med bores shoot very flat even with blunt bullets, of course I have a Jap 71 too and my brother has a 45/70.

I think the .358 is the best of the mid cal's it can match the .348 and in a 88 or 99 do it with a scope too!
