Re: Who is shooting a surplus rifle?
While Mausers have an excellent reputation etc etc I’ve never had one in my hands that didn’t have a sloppy bolt when it was all the way rearward . Recently I had a pair of custom Mauser actioned heavy rifles built by Rigby one in 375 H&H and the other in 416 Rigby . Both of them had sloppy bol...

Re: Silvertip .357 145gr on Deer???
Personally, I have contacted the bullet manufacturer about what terminal velocities the bullet was meant for rather than experiment. The people who built the bullet know what it was designed for better than anybody. This information is often already public now but in some unusual circumstances of v...

Re: Scoping a levergun
I posted these pics in another thread recently, but they are relevant here too so posting again. I think of it this way… 0-50 yards I’m comfortable with the ghost ring as the fastest way to get hits on target (I remove the peep insert when not shooting this carbine for accuracy). I’m as fast with it...

Re: Silvertip .357 145gr on Deer???
I know for a fact that the 135 grain Gold Dot is an absolute deer slayer out of a Marlin 1894, so I would think that a 145-ish would be as well I guess my concern was really about bullet construction and whether or not the Silvertip 145 would hold together well in the 1,750 - 1,850fps velocity rang...

That was the issue load for the Texas Highway Patrol Troopers for a while and it was my issue load when I was a Deputy. I know what it will do from a four inch revolver and it is impressive. Instant death on a monkey at 40 yards. If that equates to instant death on a deer at 100 from an 18.5” carbi...

Thanks for the confirmation, gents! On the twist rate, I think it’s 1:16 so should be okay for heavier bullets. Silvertip .357 145gr on Deer???
Shot some of these out of my scoped 1894C at the range last weekend and they printed average 5-shot, 100yd groups measuring 1.6875". That’s almost twice as accurate as the 3” groups I get from the load it’s sighted in with now, which is Remington HTP 180gr. My question is, will the ST hold toge...

Re: Picatinny rails and optics for Marlin 1894?
Best bases I have found are the Warne M864/864M 2-piece. They are trim, solid and don’t spoil the lines of the receiver. With a compact scope mounted, the 1894c I have them on looks like a well-proportioned miniature 336T... just as it ought to. I find that the 1-piece solid bases change the aesthet...

One of my two 1894Cs shoots Remington HTP 180gr SJSPs into little bug holes. What’s awesome about that is that my favorite revolver (early 686 6”) shoots the same load better than any other too. In an 18.5” barrel ballistics look something like: Remington HTP .357 Magnum 180gr SJHP - BC: .202; SD: ....

I mean, I get it but I still look to the DW 1911. If I ever had to use it I don't think the cost difference between it and my G26 (which i love, btw) would really be what top of mind.

I figure the 7.62 NATO is the minimum. I want something more than a varmit round. This is an interesting perspective. Not sure why it would be true, and would like to hear if others agree or not. I would pick the most general-purpose rifle and most general-purpose handgun I own, based on my location/situation. On the RDS / lever carbine combo, I may have to try that sometime. I’m pretty much an old-gun guy... even these 1894Cs and my utility revolvers from the 80’s are now considered “vintage”. Not the SP101, clearly, but the other two for sure. At bowhunting ranges the 6" 686 works well, and with the HTP a 1894C has more energy at MPBR distance than that (at least on paper). Pretty cool.
