Re: OT-Win. 1300 XTR
During my dove shooting heydays over 20 years ago I owned several shotguns including a few pump guns including a Browning BPS, Remington 870, SKB 7300, Mossberg 500, Winchester 1300 XTR Featherweight. Of them all I hung onto the model 1300 XTR as it was the most reliable, and smoothest of the bunch ...

How about a 22 Hornet bolt gun? At least the cartridge looks like it belongs in a levergun, and is reloadable. Pretty decent selection too.

Family history makes that gun priceless... at least to you and your prodigy, keep it in the family. I'm very partial to the Garand design, and also to wood stocks so my vote goes to the Minis. Wish I didn't sell mine at a time of financial destitution. Wish someone commercialized a .223 necked up to .243 though I've popped a couple piggies with 70 grain handloads which dropped them like a rock.

Two of my hunting buddies owned model 100s both in .243 Winchester. They were both 100% happy with their guns. I was surprised just how effect this round was on the large wild boars we hunted but then again these guys were experienced hunters, and great shots.

Does the Henry have a tang safety or a hammer block safety or just a good old fashioned and much preferred halfcock?
I don't think I'd have any problem with the Henry's loading system via magazine tube. For a hunting gun 6 rounds at a time more than adequate.

The old saying "you are what you eat" applies whole heartedly to pigs. I had pigs close to home that fed mainly on ferns and they tasted very gamey. These pigs also had to wander futher to get their fill so less fat and tougher meat. If I drove a couple hours I had access to pigs that fed ...

I was always under the impression that it wasn't the metallurgy that made the '73 week, it was the design, and no modern alloy could change that. Maybe the innards are a whole new design. I like the idea if it works.

I had a large owl swoop down and try to grab my cat when she was about 6 weeks old and playing on my back deck. I saw the owl coming down just as I stepped out onto the deck which made the owl veer away. If I arrived 5 seconds later I would have been catless.

I guess I have never considered 6 rounds as too few, and if I'm really concerned about bears I pack my Taurus model 44 mag with 6.5 ported barrel. If I'm REALLY concerned with BIG bears then I'll pack my short barreled 12 gauge pumpgun (Win 1300) stoked with 1-3/8 oz. Brenekke slugs. Just my 2 cents...

During bird season I prefer my simple NEF single shot 12 gauge even though I have fancier scatterguns. For close in woods hunting I usually grab my 1894 Marlin 44 mag but on the open I use a model 70 Winchester in 30-06 though a BLR in 308 would be nice. A Ruger 10-22 for general plinking fun.

Always a fan of the wheel gun. I reload so want to have my brass easily recoverable. Bears are usually loners and don't attack in groups so I figure I'd rarely need even 6 rounds to deal with a bear situation. Hard to beat the reliability of a wheel gun, rarely a jam, and much quicker dealing with a...
