"Too smooth" might mean polished to the point of having an overlarge bore and resulting in bad accuracy or leading due to the bullet loosing lead due to the bore not sealed from the burning powder heat.

I have one of the Italy made Lil Sharps in 38-55 that is great. I can't remember if it was made in .22 LR but it is a very comfortable rifle to carry and shoot. It, if it could be found, would be about perfect.

You're right about the Bee. I just made a rimless Bee (same as a .22 Johnson) on a hornet action with a bad chamber. I never thought about the possibility of a 9mm conversion. That is a handy idea ... and if it was a 16" barreled carbine it would be a great survival tool.

A few years ago ... about 40 or so ... I did a lot of competitive flint lock shooting. It was always off hand, kneeling, or sitting ... mostly standing. I could consistently hit an 18 inch gong at 200 yards with my 42 inch swamped and tapered Getz barreled 45. That was a good bit better than average...

I just bought a new battery for my 4-wheeler last week. I have an account as a garage so get good prices. The cost after the core was deducted was right about $125. It is a top of the line not a cheepie and will last more than just a year.

We ran into a problem like this with a 222 Rem. It seems the previous owner got a case stuck and drilled it out. Unfortunately the drill was a tad too large and he opened up the neck. Rebarreling is a fairly simple operation and there should be a few barrels floating around this place.

You could always do to a 44 what I did to my .357 Rossi. Several years ago someone on the forum here had modified a Rossi to handle the .357 Maximum with the 1.6" case. I used that info to get my Rossi to feed Beartooth 185 grain WFN's. Just grind off some of the lifter at the rim stop to allow...

About four years ago I got a 350 pound hog with my Rossi Trapper, a 185 grain Beartooth WFN, and Lil Gun. The bullet went through its forehead, down the neck, back through some heart, lung, stomach, and intestines to within about a foot of the other end. That's over three feet of penetration!

I've gone almost exclusivly to the Lee trimmers. Yep, you must get one for each cartridge but things stay consistant and are easy to use.

If you want a good "warm" but not "hot" load that shoots real good for a buddy of mine and me try 15 grains of Blue Dot under a 225 grain Speer bullet. Hammers deer and is accurate but is a pleasure to shoot and mild to the shoulder.
