Re: 348 Winchester vs. tundra grizzly

Here's a photo with a different angle. My hunting partner only took a few pictures before we skinned it. He was on a mission to shoot a moose. I've never eaten grizzly meat. From the mouths of those that have tried it, I've heard it's not too good. Even the word "awful" and worse phrases h...

Re: 348 Winchester vs. tundra grizzly

I hadn't shot any large game with a lever gun since 2009. For many years, I used to shoot the family moose each season with a classic lever rifle or revolver, but my 12 year old son took an interest in being the shooter in 2010 and he has downed our moose for the past three years. However, the boy p...

348 Winchester vs. tundra grizzly

In September, I was fortunate to spot this mature boar grizzly foraging on blueberries in preparation for his long winter sleep. I stalked in as close as I dared due to the open terrain, but when I knelt to shoot him I could only see his back and hump. I waited until he turned away with his rump tow...

Re: Wnchester 53?

I've got two model 53s. One is in serialized in the model 53 series (like yours) and the other in the model 1892 series. It appears that Winchester was not consistent.

Re: 45stomp?

Mike, What is your question? I'm still around. I do like to shoot moose with vintage Winchester lever guns and revolvers. But you must have me confused with someone else regarding the 45 Colt. In revolvers, I hunt mainly with the 41 Rem mag, 454 Casull, and 44 Rem mag. I briefly owned a 45 Colt but ...

Re: How many of you don't like slings and why?

None of my firearms wear a sling!

I hunt in Alaska. My rifle is either in a case on the ATV or snowmachine until I take it out to stalk my quarry. When I go sheep hunting, it is attached to my backpack. The sling is just extra weight and something to interfere with the shouldering of the weapon.

Re: Browning 53

Like KirkD, I have an original Winchester model 53 in 32WCF. With 115 gr. gas check lead bullets, it is very accurate. I use it to shoot arctic hares, red fox, and parka (ground) squirrels. The cast bullet is kind to the fur and meat if you want to salvage any of your game. Mine also has a tang sigh...

Re: Took 30 WCF hunting again.

Well I am truly honored to be featured on the beverage cooler in a man room. That is the mark of making it in this world. I lucked out and was able to shoot this moose after only two hours of hunting. It helps to know where to start looking. Shooting it close to the boat is a plus in hauling out mea...

Took 30 WCF hunting again.

Moose Album I just returned from the tundra. Success smiled upon me again this year. I didn't have time to prepare with any of my other firearms, so again I grabbed my vintage 1/2 oct, 1/2 round Winchester model 1894 rifle from the gun cabinet along with some 170 gr. Hornady reloads and ventured fo...

That's my moose!

Hey Jaguarundi, I was just reading this thread and was surprised to see myself this morning. For lack of space, I've hung the antlers from this bull upside down over the top of the door to my reloading room. They frame the door perfectly and remind me of my good fortune last September. I've also got...

Just use the Hornady (45 gr., I think) or Speer 46 gr. flat nose bullets. Both work great in my 218 Bee and 219 Zipper. Just don't expect to recover much edible meat on small game. They kill efectively.

Cementhead, Except for caribou (when congregated), the bounty of Alaskan game is often overstated. I grew up in the lower 48. A good deer area could hold a lot of the critters. The land in Alaska is big. Between groups of moose, there can be many miles of empty country. This is especially true in th...

I live in Nome, Alaska. The hunt took place on the Seward Peninsula. I never recovered either bullet that I shot the moose with. I imagine that the person I gave the offside front quarter to found one. When I was stalking this bull, my Cabela's neoprene waders were making too much noise in the willo...

Used levergun to bag Alaskan moose

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd68/dimrod/IMG_3310.jpg I dusted off my vintage Winchester 1894 in 30 WCF and took it afield in search of this year's meat. I had read that the gold rush stampeders of the late 1890s and early 1900s favored the model 1894 for its firepower and state of the art ca...
