when we fill holes in rifles like that, we recommend case coloring for that very reason. The welding blends in much better that way.

I'm very interested in the 22's, but the Big Boys are ,indeed, exceedingly ugly. There is just no way around it. I also don't like the forward loading feature on that type of rifle. I have one from 1972 that case colored nicely.

You could try cold blue to get an "antique" finish.

You could try coloring it with a propane torch.

You might want to invest in a factory letter to determine what the original configuration of the gun was, as it left the factory. A good restorer will be able to properly remove the engraving, or weld it up then re polish if it is too deep to safely remove. In that case, case coloring would be best,...
