Three Generation Maine Moose hunt... with levergun

A couple weeks ago I was blessed with good fortune to share a successful Maine moose hunt with my father and oldest son. The time since the moose lottery drawing last June when I was drawn for a bull tag has just flown by. I literally won the lottery to be selected for one of the 2700+ moose permits...

Got dug out this morning in RI up north of Pete. The snow was over knee deep but dry powder so the snow blower went through no problem. A few hours outside with the wife and kids and we had the driveway, porch, walks, and wood pile cleared out. Also had the boys shovel at the neighbors across the st...

I've read a good many western novels. After a while you need something different to spice things up. A change of scenery if you will. I read those early Sackett novels way back in high school and old England and colonial America were a nice change of pace from the old west. Along the same idea is &q...

A company called Kessler made short throw lever action shotguns in the early 50's. Do a google search and you will find they closed up shop and Marlin somehow came out making the Levermatics in the. 60's. My dad has a 30 carbine Levermatic from the first year they made them which was around 1966. Ha...

I'm from "out East" and never heard them called "speedgoats" until I hunted them for the first time last year. The locals in Wyoming referred to them pretty casually as speedgoats and didn't give the impression that it was a fancy new nickname. And they do indeed smell bad once y...

My find was on private land in the backwoods of northern Rhode Island. While doing my detective work, I had to think of calibers that were plausible to find in RI. A surplus military round to me was more plausible than finding an old Sharps cartridge. If we were in Texas, then it could be a differen...

Note that while Winchester never launched their revolver into production, and Colt did drop the Burgess lever rifle, Colt didn't exit the rifle market entirely. Colt introduced the Elliot patented slide action Lightning rifle in 1884 and kept them in production until after the turn of the century.

Your Dad's sword is a Mansfield & Lamb made in Forestdale, RI. I grew up less than a mile from where that factory used to be.

My dad has one of those Model 1860 Cavalry Sabers made the same year as yours. I always thought it was pretty neat to know it was made right next to home.
