Here is an abandoned gold mine, we visited it near the end of October, 2012. Poor Stephi stepped in some awful goop hole and lost her shoes. We decided to go exploring after Church, so she was not dressed very practical! Only a few days later we had a 7.8 earthquake, I wonder if the mine is even sti...

Re: Old Winchester model 92 .25-20
Makes me want to shoot a deer with my old .32WCF. The .25-20 and .32 are really nice rifles, but so many have sewer pipe bores from the early smokeless powder and corrosive primers. Makes finding one with a good bore pretty hard. A 92 in .25-20 or .32WCF with a nice bore is a special treasure!

I too quit hunting with fancy scoped rifles almost a decade ago. Only time my .270 gets used is if someone REALLY needs a deer, and a long shot might be a possibility. Lever guns are just FAR more practical for REAL hunting than these modern clubs with their 20X scopes. So many of my hunting friends...

Re: Winchester Model 1894 - John Browning Patent 524702
The 1894 is pretty much perfect for a woods rifle. It may not be as accurate as some bolt actions, but I have had a few that would give any crank action a run for its money. It might not come apart as easily as a Marlin, but you don't have to take it apart as often as a Marlin, either. The dropping ...

Re: 32/20 loads in the 1873 Winchester
I agree. I like my 32-20 bullets to come out the barrel at around 1,200 fps. Drops Woodchucks in their tracks. The report is relatively gentle. Indeed, the factory loads drop coons like they were pole axed, and I know of a few guys that killed deer cleanly with them. If you need more power, use the...

I had a Remington primer do that a couple of times, once with my .577 Snider and another in .45 Colt. Also had more than a few duds with remingtons. I did have a .303 Lee Enfield once, that must have had a similar primer failure. It had a little torch cut across the bolt face. Would have put most bo...

Re: New Custom 32-20 mould
I have had great results with a Rapine mould, it casts a bullet that weighs between 114-116gr. It didn't hold QUITE enough lube for black powder, though, so I put a thin lube disc under the bullet, between a couple of paper wads.

Re: 32/20 loads in the 1873 Winchester
Greetings An issue of higher pressures with jacketed bullets is the hardness of that jacket. Friction is at least 3x that of a cast boolit. More resistence in actually moving into the rifling raises pressure faster. Higher pressure raises burn rate of any powder. Thus you have a compounded increase...

That load won't hurt it none. The rifle is one of the last made with better steels, tighter tolerances, and the bullet weight your using is lighter than standard. As long as the gun is good and tight, I would shoot them. I just would not make a habit of it. 100 or 2 would be ok. I would be more con...

QCI, it is my understanding that the bulged chamber 1892 32wcf that Kirk referred to came from a load of Unique and a 115 grain cast bullet, not really an over load just a tad to heavy. That is pretty sad. Lots of old guns get wrecked using Unique, there seems to be a school of thought that Unique ...

Re: Help Please...Winchester pre'64 '94 mechanical issue
Many pre 64's had the carriers ruined by kitchen table gunsmiths. The old ones are held in by a screw on each side, and often the screw does not go into its hole in the carrier, but instead bends the carrier. Attempts to straighten it often leave it crooked. I had a 1920 vintage 1894, and it had the...
