I think the 6" is the best of both worlds. IME the 4 3/4" can be a handful with full house loads as the muzzle whip can get to you after a box of ammo, and the 7.5" is a little awkward for a good packing gun. But the 6" seems to fit perfectly in the middle.

My vote is here...I've had one for years and works flawlessly. Has a graduated fine tooth adjustment and universal chuck head. Make your own pilots easily on a lathe, or order from any vendor.

I haven't settled yet on a load. My initial thought was that 33.5gr of 3031 with a card wad separating the powder from the COW under the 265gr bullet lead bullet was going to be the ticket. I would strongly advise against using 405 loading data in any form for the 40-72. Read the below threads and you will understand why. The assumption that case capacity is the same and will take the same loads did not prove out to be accurate in the below tests. Thankfully I had started out quite low...

Madis says 1896 per Winchester records which Olin destroyed after they were compiled by Madis for historical purposes. That is a fine configuration rifle no matter what it dates to. IMO, and only My Opinion, the hype surrounding the "pre-64" moniker is mostly hype. I say mostly, because I think that the 1965-1974ish rifles were some of the worst...but only if you qualify worst in comparative terms with what was sold before. I honestly haven't heard of many malfunction...

I have a 38-72, and there are enough reloading reasons for it not to be an option IMO. I would opt for the .405 if I were you. I'm not sure if Mike Hunter does '95's or not, but the quality of his work has been well documented on this board. He is an outstanding artisan of the craft. One other thing...
