Re: Copper fouling

Otto, There are many reasons why you may get fouling towards the end of the barrel. Here are a few, Bullet weight may be wrong for the twist of barrel. This is not normally a problem, but coupled with a defective or worn barrel will cause this. You may have a poorly manufactured barrel. The barrel i...

Swab the bore with the Hoppes. Let it sit for two hours. Run a patch through it, and swab again. Don't hurry the Hoppes. I have used it, and it will work. If you want a fast way to remove copper, buy the outers foul out kit.

The ABU De-Luxe, if in as new condition will fetch at least 500 bucks, and possibly more.
The 6500c standard edition 40 to 75 bucks maybe.
I never liked the ABU's that much myself, due to the air brake they started fitting. Non the less, they are a very good quality reel, and do have a following.

Re: Stubborn stock stain, how to strip?

p.s.
Any of the full immersion soaking methods that use water based solutions(caustic hot tank), will need to dry out completely, as the wood will swell from its original size. Depending on where you live, temp and humidity, you may want to air dry it for two or three weeks before finishing.

Re: Stubborn stock stain, how to strip?

I think I would soak the thing in laquer thinners. Go get 5 gallons of gunwash thinner from an automotive paint supplier. Make up a tray to hold the thinners and lay the stock in it. It will get a lot of the crud out, and may drive some of the stain deeper into the wood, but the overall effect will ...

Old Savage,
I cant say for sure, but if you have an octagonal barrel, they are a lot more nose heavy than the 20" barrel. Maybe lead was added to balance the rifle, with the added bonus of felt recoil reduction.
I would balance the rifle to my own needs. I guess its a matter of preference.
