Kirk,

You need to bring the rifle down here to Texas and use it on hogs. All year, any method, all you want. It's a great way to keep the dust from building up in the bores!!

3 inches or less at 100 yards with an old levergun. That is plenty good for deer. I would have to get a lot closer for squirrel. When do you plan on killing a deer with it?
That's hard to answer ... I have too many old lever guns waiting for their chance to go hunting.

Well I am envious!! I bought the Browning 1886 SRC back when it came out and love it, but an original is a whole other lever. I had an opportunity a few years back to acquire an original 1886 SRC for around $1,600 but passed at the time, not realizing what a screaming good deal that was. Now I regre...

Range Report, 106 year-old Winchester carbine 44-40 (photos)

A month or so ago I received in the mail an original Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine 44-40 from northern British Columbia. The photos showed a carbine that had been up the creek and over the river .... a lot. It was probably a trapper's rifle, judging from all the history silently spoken i...

The great thing about rifles like this one is that you can lay it down or against a fence and not have to worry about a $500 scratch that might happen. The really beautiful rifles are just plain hard to hunt with. These are like a dog with its tail wagging at the door. They can't wait to get out th...

Nath: you are right about my soft spot for the 44-40! There is something nostalgic about it. It put the meat on the table for an awful lot of homesteads during the late 1800's and early 1900's. When I saw the photos of the old carbine, it looked so "rode hard and hung up wet" that I was hoping it would give me a 4" group at 10 yards to use inside the house during a home invasion. However, this gun has been a real good surprise to me.

Very nice '86 and an excellent group for your home-cast bullets. I would suggest that your home cast bullets are soft-cast (air cooled?). Commercial bullets are usually hard cast bullets to facilitate faster and easier casting. In my own experience, I've found that soft-cast bullets work much better...
