This rifle has a dark and pitted bore but shoots reasonably well but an occasional keyhole occurs with cast bullets. I personally think RL7 is too slow a powder to work reliably in the 38-40 unless your using full power loads or jacketed bullets.

Park it to the side and make it easy on yourself and use a fast to medium rate powder such as Unique. That makes it a no-brainer.----6

Here ya go Coyote Nose.......I love showing this stuff off.....this is one of my holy grails, a near new 97-98% made in 1891. Caliber is 38-40.----6 The rod is in the same shape as the gun and I don't think it was ever put together. The handle tip is steel, not brass and I did not try to unscrew it....

Oh! The shoot fest! Old Savage reminded me in a private message. Anyway, the shoot fest......yes, the BAR did wonderful but it's still no tackdriver....it's as good or better than most bolt action varmint rifles. I had 100 rds of 150 Nosler Ballistic Tips and 50 rds. of 168 Hornady HPBT match ammo.....
