I've always used good ole Lyman #2 alloy. Leverluver and FW said it pretty well......only thing I can add to that is the shape of the bullet.....we've dropped elk in their tracks with a flat faced 45-70 buller. You can also use pure lead up to 1800-2000 fps for a great mushroom in the lesser caliber...

I personally think RL7 is too slow a powder to work reliably in the 38-40 unless your using full power loads or jacketed bullets.

Park it to the side and make it easy on yourself and use a fast to medium rate powder such as Unique. That makes it a no-brainer.----6
