There is nothing wrong with getting a Ruger 10/22 as a first rifle. Good for him to choose what he wants, and purchase it himself. you did fine. changing/resetting dies is the drawback of a single press. get a bunch of the quick changers. the lee equipment ,to quote his book is only 3 or 4 times stronger than you need, while some are 10 or more times. thus the price difference. for what it's worth i've never seen a broken press...
