Haven't been to one since they moved to NM, so hesitate to comment too much. Spectated some at one at Coto de Casa back when it was held there (would've been '91), was to two of 'em at Norco workin' on vendors' row and was there once as a competitor (my back went out repacking the gear after a motel...

Re: Why do you reload?

In my case: It started out as being for economics. Then for accuracy and to use premium bullets that weren't loaded by the factories. Then specialty loads (low velocity plinker/small game getters, shot loads, that kind of thing). Went through quite awhile where it was a matter of cranking out a mess...

The lightest thing I could find in the current Lyman listings is 457191, which comes in barely under 300gr. http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bullet-casting/mould-details-rifles.php?entryID=71 In discontinued designs, mould 457127 would fit the OP's requirements pretty nicely. Years back, when I was using my M61 at turkey shoots, I mounted a Bushnell scope on it and was able to dramatically reduce the group size and win lots of shoots. They are great little rifles. Re: 6.5 mm X 54 Manlicher vs. 30/30

I think both the 6.5X54 M/S and the .30-30 earned much of their reputations because they're cartridges of sufficiently good performance without too much blast and recoil for the average person to shoot well that were paired with light, fast-handling carbines which shared in said reputations. I bought the Duke rig made by El Paso Saddlery over 20 years ago. Added a crossdraw holster from them not too much later. Still use the holsters on occasion, although the belt seems to have shrunk (that's my story and I'm sticking to it). It's been good gunleather.

I've put one of those Lyman Gould-designed 330 gr cast HPs from a 10" BFR through a deer at about 75 yds. Not even close to a hot load, but the bullet impacted high, removed a section of spine more than 3" long and left a correspondingly large exit wound. I like that BFR; being stainless a...
