That sounds like quite a bit of slack, but if you have to push it to make it go that far out (it doesn't go that far out of line just with normal cycling), I think you're ok.

Something doesn't look right. What hammer did you end up using? I have switched to pre-64 tangs, post-64 flat mainspring tangs and coil mainsprings, but I've never had one expose the inards behind the hammer like that. My wife said I needed one in case of an emergency out at the ranch. I reluctantly complied and broke my leg out in the pasture two weeks later!

Are talking age by when the parts were made or when they were put together?

Mine do have a slight difference in those ages. Some parts are pre 1902, but one was assembled last month. The one with a 1906 receiver hadn't been born (well, reborn) yet.

I took it for a spin today with some others. Though the temp was great there was a bit of wind and it may have spread the group a little. Joe, I just looked at the Numrich website and that barrel is availible. When I got one nearly twenty years ago it was in .30-30. I had to have it rebored to .38-55 myself. According to what I've read in a reference book I don't have with me at the moment, there was a carbine produced with a a rifle stock. It was at least informally called an "Eastern Carbine". It did not have a saddle ring, however.

If you try a soapy rag on the cartridges first, you might not need as much elbow grease on the steel wool.
