As important to machinability as the type of steel is the harding & tempering of it. From what I gather you dont want a very hard steel for a barrel, you want a tough one.

It shouldnt matter, though many folks will say you need to operate them with authority. All of my lever actions, predominately Marlins, work as fast or as slow as I operate them, if I get one that wont & I cant fix it I wont keep it. I frequently baby them to keep brass on the bench.

The pistol calibers are more prone to it than rifle cal;ibers just because of how it works. The lifter comes up just enough to stop the lext round from coming into the reciever when you open the action. It does this when the body of the case is still part way inside the tube, so theres more wiggle r...

Only real danger or issue is the fireing pin might not reach them good. LR primers are taller than LP primers so Rifle primer pockets are deeper. In really hot loads it might matter since the primer is going to get pushed forward until it bottoms out & then upon fireing the pressure will push it...

Soft can be more forgiving but you cant push them 2000 fps. I'v got an old Marlin 38/55, it slugs over .381 but wont chamber a bullet over .380.
