Re: heavy loads for 45 LC in Marlin 1894 Cowboy

I like unique and use it frequently. I will try the 9.5 grain load and check it for velocity. I have used a good bit of 2400 but have found it a bit dirty with a lot of unburned granules. It may be it likes more of a magnum load and a heavy crimp.

Re: heavy loads for 45 LC in Marlin 1894 Cowboy

I am looking for about 1100 feet per second with the 300 grain bullet.
My concern is the powder pressure spike with a fast burning powder.

heavy loads for 45 LC in Marlin 1894 Cowboy

I have been shooting the Lyman 454190 cast lead to tin 20-1 sized .454 with a OL of 1.6 inches in my Marlin 1894 cowboy. My powder has been Winchester 231 at 8 grains with a velocity of 1060 feet per second. I have a couple of LBT moulds a 265 grain FN and a 300 grain FN. My question is what powder ...

Re: barrel twist for Winchester Model 1886 U.S. Repeating Arms

Using the Greenhill formula for my RCBS 300 Grain FN Length .802 diameter .461 ,crimp grove to meplat .445 it will stabilize as low as 500 fps. However my goal was to shoot at 1000 to 1200 FPS so the recoil will be less. The part that touches my shoulder is steel! The formula will also be useful to ...

barrel twist for Winchester Model 1886 U.S. Repeating Arms

My Winchester Model 1886 made by U.S. Repeating arms company in 45-90 has a 26 inch barrel. I want to find the twist. I know about using using a cleaning rod and a tight patch to estimate the twist but I would like to see the official data. I would like to plug all this to get the maximum length bul...

Winchester(Mikoru) 1886 45-90-Hodgdon trail boss loads

My question is about bulk loading-similar to loading black powder- for the 45-90. My latest issue of Double Gun Journal-Single Shot Journal has an article on Bulk Loading with Hodgdon's Trail Boss for Black Powder Express Rifles. The article stated to fill the case to the base of the bullet, weigh t...

Re: 45 LC target load for Marlin 1894 - Lyman # 454190

You are correct that the Marlin Web site list the twist as 1 in 18 inches. I ran a tight patch from muzzle to breech with a cleaning rod that revolves, and marked with a piece tape. It only revolved about 3/4 of a turn from muzzle to chamber. My guess is it must be the old 1 in 38. I could repeat if ...

45 LC target load for Marlin 1894 - Lyman # 454190

My question is about working up a target load for Lyman # .454190 250 grains cast with Linotype and lubed with liquid Alox, and sized .454. Most of the load information is for a Pistol with a 1 in 12 twist. My 1894 Marlin cowboy 24 inch barrel has a 1 in 38 twist. Somewhere in my files I have a copy-...

Re: Heavy bullet -45 LC loads for Marlin 1894-cowboy

Yance:
Thanks a lot for the article from Pacco Kelly. I am going to work up a load with a slower burning 2400. I think I will start with 16.5 grains and work it through a chronograph. The bullet is a LBT LFN-GC sized .454 lubed with LBT Blue lube.

Re: Heavy bullet -45 LC loads for Marlin 1894-cowboy

Yance and John: Did you have a reference in writing for the loads you are suggesting? Could you give me the reference? I read in one of the loading manuals that a slower burning 2400 might work better in the 45 LC rifle. I had Veral Smith make this LBT mold for me for my 454 Casuel Freedom Arms revo...

Heavy bullet -45 LC loads for Marlin 1894-cowboy

Is there any data on a 320 grain LFN cast bullet deep seated in a 45 LC with an OL of 1.585? I have check and this bullet will feed properly. I made a dummy round to test feeding. The mold is a LBT LFN length .820 sized .545 and lubbed with liquid alox. My plan was to load on top of 5.5 grains of Re...
