That bullet looked like one of the old swaged .357 Speer bullets! I'd love to get my hands on those, but got lots of the Lee/Lyman cast LFN bullets made up ready to load.

Re: my nicest marlin model 39
I envy you! I'm stuck with a '48 and a '77. Hated the fat fore stock so much that I picked up a later skinnier one and sanded it to fit and stuck it on the '48. Most of my shooting/hunting these days is the '77 though with quiet ammo, CB short and long and the quiet stuff.

Re: Proper Winchester - Marlin comparisons
Pardon me for not reading the whole thread, but, I've had a Marlin 336c in 35 rem. AND a Win 94 in 30/30. And while the 336 was much more capable of better accuracy, the Win 94 was lighter for carrying and had a shorter lever throw that was much better in allowing a faster second shot on whatever yo...

Yes, BIG improvement! I also didn't like the marshield on my '77 39a, so striped it and recoated it with tru-oil. Later I picked up a '70s Win 94 30/30 that the finish was cracking on, so gave it the same treatment. Gave both the steel wool rub down.

Yup, that's the way my '77 39a is set up. Just match the curve of the bullseye with the curve of the stock, less frustration that way.

Believe it or not, over time they do eventually loosen up and work their way out. I've got a 1977 39a that that happened to. Fortunately, I found it and glued it back in, with wood glue if I remember right, likely with Elmers. HTH
