Re: Questions on the Marlin "Marauder"
Usually the first giveaway of a "faked" Marauder will be the foreend. It will look too long compared to the short barrel. If you have a 16.5" barreled 336RC with a W,Y or Z prefix, rounded lever and short forend it will almost always be a Marauder. I have owned three 30-30 and one 35 ...

I can't resist the looks of a Ruger 1A, and have bought several over the years. Each time remember why I sold the last one when I try to mount a scope on it. I hate crawling a stock to get a good sight picture.

The author of this chapter, Horace Kephart, was an interesting fellow. He was a librarian in St. Louis who just pulled up stakes and moved to the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and lived in a little cabin in the backcountry. I bought a stainless 4" Tracker in 44 last year for around $300 (a bargain I know). They can be had for around $400 fairly routinely if you look. I also owned one in 357 several years ago. The quality of both was very good. The 44 was downright painful to shoot more than a cylinder full per ses...

You have to hold the crescent further out on your arm or the points are going to dig into your shoulder at some point. If you have very big arms sometimes even this approach does not help. I like the looks of them too, but have resigned myself to using only shotgun style butt plates for this very re...

If the barrel is not ported then it is not an original 336D. A 336D will have an 18" ported barrel and will be blued with a straight grip, checkered walnut stock.

Here in north central Alabama I see lots of bolt rifles in 270, 30-06, 7mm Mag and 300 Mag. Lots of Browning BARs in those chamberings well. Although I have seen a handful of NY made Marlins that had good fit and finish, most I have personally inspected are pure junk. Even if Remington gets their act together and starts producing quality Marlin rifles again, the damage already done to brand may be too much to overcome.

I don't know about the scope, but the rifle alone should be worth $400-475 based on the condition and the fact that the sights are missing. They are very neat rifles. I have had two made in 1979 like the one pictured and they were both very accurate.
