Molten sulfur also works well for chamber casts..
Gauge pins can be used but won't give you a true picture of an out-of-round chamber.. Unfortunately, a lot of Rossi chambers prove to be either over-sized or egg-shaped to some meausurable degree, which can cause problems with the high pressure .454..

You could do it in a .44 Spl, but only at the price of higher pressures and more wear & tear on the gun.. if you have to get those ballistics from a .44, you're better off with a Magnum chamber from the get-go...

I've owned a few, all in .45 Colt, and my current example is a Short Rifle, with octagon barrel... i will say that there are sturdy, well-made and accurate guns, and a world of fun to shoot..
