Top off your powder charge with shotgun shot buffer powder before you seat the bullet. The plastic powder acts as gas check and will improve accuracy. Try it, nothing to lose and a lot cheaper than a reline...won't devalue your 1873.

Used 300 gr. Woodleighs in my 1895 Win 405 on everything from impala to eland. Very accurate, expanded to .75 and retained over 90% of their weight.

If you're getting more kick with the crescent butt, you must be shouldering it wrong. The crescent butt fits the natural curve of the shoulder. Check his other auctions. He has an octagon barreled 45-60 for $4500 that might be worth the money. The round barrel and under-sized wood ruins the $3000 rifle for me.
