The US has never required proofing of arms, which is a LEGAL construct... This is true. The government here doesn't require proof. The makers are simply held liable for any harm that mistakes in the manufacture of their guns might cause. From a mechanical engineering standpoint, surviving one or tw...

No and yes. I believe every gun produced is proofed, and CIP proofs require two proof loads to be fired.adirondakjack wrote:Getting ONE rifle through CIP is one thing, sending em out properly fitted up day after day is quite another.
Just looking at the action, I'm amazed it works with the .357.

Re: Why a 2' brl on a pistol cartridge rifle?
Steve, I doubt those .38 Spl's are running out of gas in your 24" barrel. I recall reading one needs an expansion ratio of about 50 to get the bullet to slow down in the barrel. A .38 in a 24" is about 40. It's not that unusual for one short barrel gun to outrun one with a longer barrel. T...

Getting the sights farther away helps older eyes. The longer barrel means a lower muzzle pressure farther from your ears, so it will be a bit quieter, too. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and to these eyes any barrel shorter than 24" looks sawn off, unless it's a single shot in which cas...

So, do any of the classic lever actions permit slow stroking of the action? How about the Henry and its ancestors (through the 76). I imagine the 99 won't jam if stoked slowly. Short stroking is another matter. The Henry clan should bind nicely on a short stroking it in, but finishing the forward st...

IL = 500 foot pounds of muzzle energy minimum for handgun hunting. And the rule on "barrel length" allows you to hunt deer with a 4" derringer in .30 Carb having useless sights and a horrid trigger, but a 3" Model 60 .357 with fully adjustable sights and a fine trigger is illega...

Ok, I'm the odd man out: I like the '81 Marlin (light frame) and the Savage 99 (early models).
Of those actions still in production, it's hard not to like a '92 Win., but the '73 with a color case frame and a 26" half octagon barrel over a half magazine would be nice to have made up.

I've never understood is the price for doubles 1) They are fairly low volume production, so you end up with more hand labor and less automation. 2) You're pretty much buying two complete rifles on one stock. 3) The barrels are traditionally soldered together. To get them to "regulate" to ...

What sort of performance do you want from your .38-40? Uberti will have to proof their .357 Mag 73s for the European .357 rating of 44,000 psi. This suggests their action is strong enough for warmer loadings in the .38-40. The .38 is a much larger diameter, so you certainly won't be able to go to 44...
