No proof. Didn't even really think about firearms until my family moved to Wyoming in the 70s.

I did buy a BB pistol at age 13 or so. It got confiscated and replaced with a Compound Bow.

Got "officially" into shooting as a Frosh in HS.

If you don't like .44 you could always swap out the barrel for a reamed-out .357 and shoot .357/44 B&D... (That's probably what I would do...)
