Levers on large game

Sitting in the stand during deer hunting. I started thinking about the fact that I have never shot a deer with a bolt action rifle. If fact a dozen years ago I put away my main deer slayer and decided to shoot at least one deer with every levergun I have. So lets see your list of guns you have used ...

Real Men hunt with a Model 71 Win

Just finished the whitetail deer season here in Wisconsin. This year I used a Model 71 made in 1954. I had an opportunity to shoot some small deer at about 15 yards. I thought the 348 a little overkill for such little deer. Plus if I am going spend some time butchering deer, I better have meat to pu...

Because you just fall into things. My first 32 was a H&R with a swing out cylinder in 32 long. $75 in my pocket got the gun. Then I realized how handy it was. Carried it all the time in the woods. I got a Taurus 357 and it wasn't as handy. The 357 went down the road. Then I got a baby Vaquero in 32 ...

Make sure it has a good bore. I had one that would not shoot because the bore was that bad. Anything over 1200 FPS would keyhole. I sold it to some one who collected them and did not care if the bore was bad.
I hope this one has a good bore. Good Luck!

NICE! You got the bolt peep, I'm jealous. The deluxes with bolt peep were out my price range around here. Still reasonable for an old Winchester, but more than I had to spend. Get a home monitor device from your doctor. Not all sleep labs do have them , but because of high cost of a sleep study these are becoming more popular. Insurance will cover them. You just wear it for one night and return it. If it is real abnormal they will want you to come in for a full sleep study.

Re: Did the guy with the 94....

The problem I was trying to fix was the fact that I needed to squeeze the lever hard to disengage the lever safety. This was on a 94 in 307 Win, which needless to say I never found a magic load for. It never shot better than 2 MOA. Which is fine for deer hunting.

I fixed this by using a smaller diameter pin. I used the shank of a drill bit for a pin of the correct diameter. It was only a 1/64 smaller that the factory pin and it made all the difference.

I looked at the Barnes 160 gr and you will need to make a dummy load to see how AOL will work. I think you will need to loose the tip to do it. I can send you a few pieces of 307 brass to use. Then if you want to send me a dummy round I can run it through my 356 to see how it functions.

The parts auction has all the internal parts you need and more. You could go that way then resell the parts you don't need. I like the way you think! It will be affordable because you should be able to use 338 Federal dies and JES can use a 338 federal head space guage. The bullet will be set deeper because of AOL. So you will loose case capacity for powder. Starting loads for the 338 Federal might be your maximum. I not...
