Sir, I'm very sorry for your Father's injury and hope he heals well and recovers soon! I also wish the best for your mother and you as well. If you can't visit, perhaps you can get a call in to speak with him before surgery. The nurses' station on the ward where he is could probably help with that, ...
Pretty cool! One of these days I would like to see one up close, my father was a ball turret gunner on one. You OWE it to yourself to fly in one of these while you still can!! After being a WW2 warbird fan since 1969, I finally had the money when a plane was here. I went for a flight on the Memphis...
Glad y'all are alright!! Thanks for the reminder! I consider these episodes to be life's giving one a lesson with free tuition. Hope your wife realizes that this has always been and always will be a possibility. These events can erupt with ZERO warning most anywhere, and for some reason, that is jus...
My condolences, and I feel for you! But, if it's any consolation, that dog appears to have had about the world's finest "Dad!" Glad to see the adventures he got to go on, and I cracked up over his pulling the sled loaded with dog food! I'm sure he had a fine life with you -- much better th...
Dave, very wise words... This in particular, I can identify with from personal experience: "It is always good to find someone to give at least some of them to. It can be hard to find just the right person but they are out there. I t is best to give them stuff when they are young and can use it ...
"It is not my rifle, but there is no way I would ever spray coat it." Ditto. There's a guy trying to sell a nice, early S&W Model 19 around here -- he's been at it for a long time, because it's been Duracoated. Nobody will touch it with a 10 foot pole. There are some guns that just sho...
Based on my experience with plain-based, machine-cast .30 cal. bullets, i think you may find them pretty hard to get to shoot well. Pushing plain-based bullets with the typical hard commercial lube to 1400=1500 fps seems a bit ambitious, but it might work. You may find best accuracy at lower velocit...
Thanks, and glad you enjoyed it! Sorry you don't get to hunt squirrels any more --
maybe you'd enjoy C.S. Landis's book on hunting small game with the .22. (I'm blocking
on the exact title right now.) I really liked that one -- and it is entertaining!
John
My experience with .22 shorts started at summer camp, where the highlight of each day was "riflery class." There, we were issued a whopping 10 Shorts and practiced prone on small bulls eyes, using old single-shot rifles which required you to pull the striker back to cock them after loading...
Skeeter Skelton did a lot of work with Lyman's 358156 GC/SWC, and was well pleased with it. Molds can be hollow-pointed fairly easily nowadays. If I were to settle on this bullet, I'd get a multi-cavity mold for most of my bullets, and HP a single cavity mold for greater ease of casting the ones for...
"Squirrels+attic=bad news!" That's for sure! My parents had squirrels in their attic, and tried every non-lethal means they could think of to drive them away, for quite some time. Then a friend of theirs burned to death in a fire caused by squirrels gnawing on wiring insulation in her atti...
Sixgun's not kidding about them being the size of a .22 -- The last one I saw at a show, I almost missed because
it was in a rack of .22 pumps. Only after I went back to look at one, did I realize one was a .32-20!
w30wcf , Very cool pictures! I envy your comprehensive knowledge of these old calibers! :D We can always count on you to contribute valuable information -- thanks very much! Cool find on those old cartridges -- and I think a .38-40 Win 92 rifle is a very worthwhile piece, even if they don't get muc...
Personally, I think OS's posts are fun, pleasant and always interesting. The alleged "complaint" ( :o ) strikes me as ludicrous in its' over-reaction to entirely appropriate pictures. Political Correctness is used as a weapon to strangle any ideation/expression that Liberals...
My Dad bought one in 1938, and it has given excellent service ever since. While I was in Graduate School, some local entrepreneurs opened a 100-yard indoor range. I mounted a 24X Leupold target scope on it and tested it with my best lot of Eley Standard (brown label) -- their cheapest grade of match...
When stationed in Germany back in the early '80's I sent my Dad a Puma "Mariner" filet knife, which was made before the company was sold and quality went down the tubes. He used it with great results -- flexible, razor sharp blade that holds a good edge and is easy to sharpen. Has a red, f...
Another vote for the Air Arms TX200 in .177, using wadcutter H&N or RWS match pellets. These pellets ate very accurate, impart more shock to the target, and cut a sharp-edged "cookie-cutter" hole that promotes rapid blood loss. Mine chronos 940 fps and will stay under 1" at 50 yar...
Charles,
thanks for the good info! I've been looking at the web belts for some time.
Do you have a preference for either tapered or billeted ends, and if so, why?
German Shepherd puppy -- I wanted a calm one, and one of the litter was isolating away from the others and very quiet. Bad mistake: she had bad genetics (unbeknownst to me, obviously) and had all sorts of anxiety problems, didn't bond with us like normal dogs, had poor impulse control and was animal...
If you compare this guy's forehead height/shape to that of Carlos, I think you won't see
much resemblance. Photo attributions err all the time. Doesn't look like CH to me... FWIW.
Howdy, folks,
Something happened to my computer/settings? that reduced the print size on my view of this forum to the size of ant-tracks. All other sites are
normal. I've looked hard for a solution but no luck. Does anyone here know how to fix this?
My Dad's best friend was an infantry platoon leader in Europe from right after D-day through the Battle of the Bulge. He was in a lot of combat and suffered badly from PTSD/survivor guilt all of his life. He almost never talked about his experiences, but did mention that the first German that he kil...
You might consider a lead round ball load. Lighter weight = less energy, and the ballistically inferior shape loses velocity very quickly. Many folks have worked them up to shoot to POI at ~25 yards with their normal hunting loads. There is a wealth of info on this on the Cast Boolits website. Good ...
The price would be extremely high here. I see them offered for sale in blue finish periodically,
and in excellent condition, they aren't fast sellers at a top-dollar price of $400.
They do appear to be well made (West German quality), but that price is obscene, IMHO.
glad to hear that you're still hunting with your DAD ...don't sweat the tree-stand...from a guy who lost his WWII vintage Dad back in 2000, i'd say having the pleasure of your Dad's company and having a great story about the demise of this year's deer is priceless ( plus the use of leverguns is alw...
"Sooooo, where's the pics of the trophy bug with you posing with your gun?" I'm sure he rushed it right to the taxidermist.... probably be back in a few weeks, mounted on a nice walnut plaque... Hey, Ji, did you opt for a full head/shoulders mount, or just a Euro-style skull and ante...
Out of curiosity, would a like-new, relatively late-production original Ithaca 37 have any mechanical, technical or reliability advantages/disadvantages vs. the new-manufactured ones? I recently saw an original in 20 ga., and other than having rather plain wood, it seemed very nice. Any thoughts wou...
"Nobody was fool enough to try and take me out of there as that [German] Shepherd loved me and would take chunks out of anyone who came close to me " Gundownunder, that reminds me of one of my GSD's that I had while in the Army, stationed at {scenic  } Ft. Polk, LA. My wife baby...
Yes, I have fired in 300-yard reduced HP rifle matches. It's important to see where each shot goes as you fire it, in slow-fire. They had white target cloth hung from the back of the target frames at a 45 degree angle to catch the sunlight. It made even .223 bullet holes in the black easy to spot in...
I got to pet a "rescue"possum that had been saved as a baby, and as said above, it was very clean and docile, with amazingly soft, silky fur -- due to good nutrition, its coat was just beautiful! The owner said that despite their fierce-looking teeth, they are very non-aggressive, and all ...
