Re: Baikal combination gun
I have one in 12/7X57R, a bit of a handloading proposition, although Graf probably imports cartridges for it. Haven't used it much, but it shoots OK. It's blocky, and heavy, and built like a tank. I think that's the Russian way. Seems like I only have to look at it to make it rust, though - really n...

Hornady has a kit, not too expensive, easy to use. You need a slow-turning drill or driver to rotate the cases in the flame. Have had good results with it.

Re: Electronic ear muffs...what do you shoot with and recomm
A second vote for the Peltors with the behind-the-head band, if you intend to use a hat, and particularly if you plan to use them hunting, where a hat may be more important than at the range. You can damage your ears just as easily out in the field as at the range, and it can happen with only one sh...

Re: While on moose caliber topic...
I'm certainly no expert on BLRs and their variations, but the stainless/takedown model in .325 WSM that I bought a couple of years ago has a 22" barrel. That seems to be the standard length, at least with newer rifles. I don't think that I'd want a shorter barrel with this cartridge. In my opin...

Re: While on moose caliber topic...
You don't need a big gun for moose, but you do need premium bullets to get adequate and reliable penetration. I've shot moose with calibers from the .270 Weatherby to the .30 WCF to the .375 H&H, and the Weatherby kills them as quickly as anything. That said, if you want an 8mm, my vote is for t...

Re: The high price of good rifle scopes
New is too much? Well, I think that there are a lot of good new scope values out there, but I seldom buy a new scope, when I can buy a perfectly functioning model (mostly Leupold) used for half the price. Even better: buy a quality used rifle with the scope that you want, keep the scope and sell the...

Re: Legislation being considered to slaughter horses in US
There are no "wild horses" in North America. They went extinct thousands of years ago. There are, however, thousands of feral horses overunning western rangelands, competing with native wildlife, and costing taxpayers dearly with the government's irrational policies. Exactly why isn't the ...

Re: Adak, Alaska Caribou Hunt
Adak is an eerie place, a modern ghost town. And a good example of government waste - they built a beautiful new high school a few years before the Navy pulled out. I never understood that. You'd think that this would be a strategic location for the military. Anyway, there's no way the native corpor...

This is a private, for-profit operation, so don't be fooled by the "club" moniker. I subscribed many years ago, but never arranged for a hunt swap, which seemed to be the primary reason for their existence, and a good concept. I don't know how well it was executed. I always found the "...

Re: Browning BLR
I bought a stainless/takedown .325 WSM model a couple of years ago, and it's a great rifle: light, powerful, strong, accurate (despite the trigger), well-balanced to carry all day, and weather-resistant. It ain't pretty, but it almost immediately became my favorite, go-to levergun. I really like the...

Never had alligator or mountain lions, but have taken and eaten black bear, moose, barren ground caribou, whitetails, mule deer, elk, Dall sheep, mountain goat, pronghorn, Kodiak Sitka blacktails, beaver, and musk ox. Re: Use the lowest power scope you can see the vital zone in.
In this age of hulking scopes that are as big and heavy as spotting scopes, we should be thankful that Leupold still makes two of the finest all-around hunting scopes of all time: the VX-II 1-4, and the VX-III 1.5-5. They are also incredibly light, something no other maker seems to be able to do, an...

I used to think that the BLRs were not very attractive leverguns, but when they came out with the stainless takedown .325 last year, I had to have one, and now I'm a convert. It's an amazing rifle: light, well-balanced, very accurate (despite the trigger), corrosion-resistant, easy to pack, and stro...

The United States has never had a "Teddy Roosevelt" as president. There was one "Theodore Roosevelt", however, who happened to occupy the office early in the last century, and who was (my opinion) one our three greatest presidents. If this auction house doesn't have the knowledge...

Stainless/laminated/takedown in .325 WSM, shooting Barnes 200 grain TSX handloads. Good for anything on the continent. Amazingly accurate, despite the trigger. You can't do better for an all-around big game rifle.

About a month ago, Nosler ran a father-son mule deer hunt, in Colorado, I think. The son was about 13, and he took a shot at a mule deer that was wayyyy out there. I ran the segment in slow motion several times, and it looked as though the bullet struck about three feet over the buck's head. The son...

Last summer, I bought a BLR synthetic/stainless takedown in .325 WSM. It is one of the most accurate rifles that I own, and own a few. Other posts here have also attested to the accuracy of BLRs. Although I only own this one BLR, I doubt that there is an accuracy difference between these and the sol...

If you don't like the shiny finish, get the stainless/synthetic version. I never owned a BLR, but when they came out with the stainless model a couple of years ago, I told a friend that if they came out with a takedown version in .325 WSM, I'd scoop one up. Well, last summer I spotted one in a gunsh...

I would buy it, too. I have one of the early rifles in that caliber, and it's one of the most accurate rifles I've owned. It's also easy to reload, although the initial price of the Norma brass will set you back a few dollars. I use nothing but 150 grain Partitions and 7828. I started with this comb...

Hope you get your moose tag, Bigbore. I wrote and lobbied through the New Hampshire moose management bill in the mid-1980s, when I was executive director of NH Wildlife Federation. Most of the moose that I've shot fell to my Ruger 1B in .270 Weatherby with 150 grain Partitions. Ditto for the only one that dropped instantly on the spot (not a head or spine shot, either.) The one that went the furthest (75 yards) was hit in the chest from a 300 grain Partition out of a Ruger 1H ...
