Sarge, Congrats on the carbine. I love it. But, it ain't broke, why fix it? Put a receiver sight on it, and use it. Why go changing the wood and barrel sights? As it is it's perfect, you can't hurt it by using it. I know, it's yours and you can do what you want. But, I was just asking. Joe You have...

I've used roundball loads in the old 30 WCF for nuisance critters and occasionally, to ease women and kids into the centerfire rifle. These I single-loaded.

Otherwise, I shoot full-power loads in the old girl; to stay sharp with my hunting loads more than any other reason.

I think the point here is that a lesser amount of focused, results-driven practice beats hell out of just slinging ammo downrange with no specific purpose- and no goals for improvement on the part of the shooter.

That is an absolute.

They are indeed strong. The limiting factor on mine seems to be its cavernous chamber because with really heavy .45 Colts loads, it stretches brass worse than my Vaquero. Still, it handles 300+ grain Keiths at 1350 without complaint and those will shoot through a whole lot of critter.

When Ruger called the later version the New Vaquero, the made mine the 'old' one by natural extension.
